26th aug - What's On! newsletter - Having missed issuing last weeks newsletter, as I was away on Haslemere Hockey Tour in Hulst, there is much to say in this edition, but if you can stay with me to the bitter end I can offer you the prospects of some firkinexcellent refreshment. I'm also sending this out a day early just so I can let you know in time that you are invited to the The Square tomorrow (Friday) morning to meet our new local police constable PC Lucy Ryan who replaces PC Kirsty Langridge more...

13th aug - What's On! newsletter - It was very entertaining this week to watch, as I sipped my morning coffee outside the Village Kitchen Caterers, a workman cutting the many blue strings wrapping up the branches of the four newly planted trees in the square. Not an easy task considering the height of the trees and the elegant solution he came up with was a knife strapped to the end of a very long pole. more...

6th aug - What's On! newsletter - Grayshott Pottery seem always to be in the news and this week they have conjured up yet another article this time about the launch of their new visitor leaflet which on close inspection looks strangely familiar. It aims to entice us muggles into coming along to see their many attractions and has been cleverly designed to appeal to any Tom, Dick or Harry. And that's magic! more...

30th jul - What's On! newsletter - The polo last Saturday at Applegarth was most impressive. I don't think I've seen so many black top of the Range Rovers in one place before. Tom Benson is quite a star, rather stealing the show I thought, and it was just as well he'd elected to play for the losing side 'Work, Rest & Polo', who were outplayed in the end by home team Polo4, or it might have been a whitewash. more...

23rd jul - What's On! newsletter - I was admonished at early beers last week for a humourless lacklustre newsletter. It's a fair cop but in my defence I mentioned there was a lot of news to cover and indeed no less than 5 news items to post last Friday morning alone before I could even think of a single pun. Only one news item this week though, it's about Magdalene Odundo, now a ceramics professor, revisiting 36 years later her alma mater, Grayshott Pottery, so no excuses... more...

16th jul - What's On! newsletter - As promised last week we have news of the Shakesperience which included a gourmet bbq and polo match before 'Love's Labours Lost' was performed to a record audience of 400 at Applegarth. It may be shutting the horsebox door but I came across www.theshakesperience.com which tells you everything you should have known about this groundbreaking collaborative event for Grayshott Concerts, Applegarth and polo4. Let's hope they'll be another... more...

9th jul - What's On! newsletter - This Saturday the Grayshott Gardeners hold their Summer Show in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm. This year they are also hosting the 'Close Brooks' competition in which Grayshott is competing with 6 of our neighbouring villages to display the best collection of cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and a pot plant! Entry is free and there'll be tea & cakes. Also next Thursday the Social Club hosts a Jam Night for the youngsters. more...

2nd jul - What's On! newsletter - This Saturday at noon the Grayshott Primary School Summer Fair gets underway on the school fields with plenty to see and do. I was really impressed last year with how busy it all was and it's reassuring to see this annual village event going from strength to strength. We are so fortunate to have such a super village school in our midst and it's a real credit to the latest generation of Parents and Teachers who continue to raise much needed funds to better our childrens education more...

25th jun - What's On! newsletter - By all accounts the Sunday Funday was a great success and enjoyed by one and all. The music from 'Sounds of Steel', 'Western Aces' and 'Something for the Weekend' went down particularly well and we were blessed with probably the best weather yet so the bar did a roaring trade to help pay for it all. The carnival procession was a bit thin on the ground but when you look at the joy it brings to those happy little sunflowers it is well worth it. more...

18th jun - What's On! newsletter - We have another busy world cup weekend lined up for you in Grayshott - kicking off with the England game tonight, live music from our world cup winning era tomorrow, and finishing with plenty of vuvuzela at the Sunday Funday. Talking of PIGS - last week things were looking a bit grim for Portugal, Italy and Greece and Spain looks to be in real trouble. No, I'm not talking about looming sovereign insolvencies but more importantly their world cup performances. more...
|
11th jun - What's On! newsletter - In case you hadn't noticed the world cup starts today with the opening match at 3pm this afternoon between the hosts South Africa and Mexico. The Social Club have spent the last few weeks preparing for this bonanza and you just won't believe the aladdins cave of flags and world cup memorabilia that awaits fans as they flock to the view all on the giant screen. It may well be standing room only for the England games and I guess we'll find out tomorrow night at 7.30pm more...

21st may - What's On! newsletter - Grayshott Scouts hold a Jumble sale this Saturday morning between 10am and 12noon in the Village Hall. So it's a good opportunity to have a rummage around the spare room, garage and loft and locate a number of old useless items to donate to the sale and at the same time create some space which will come in useful later as you return from the sale laden with a similar number of new useless items. more...

14th may - What's On! newsletter - What a week that was, surely a hung parliament has never been so much fun. Just when it looked like we'd be Lib-Conned for sure, it seemed as though we might instead be Lib-Labbed, but then Brown resigned and David agreed with Nick that we should be Con-Demned after all. I jest of course - it's all very encouraging isn't it, and just what we were promised, a radical change in government. more...

7th may - What's On! newsletter - If you are feeling a bit hungover you're not alone, but at least you won't feel quite as frustrated as the voters who queued for hours only to be disenfranchised at underprepared polling stations - perhaps they should have held them instead in breweries. Well hung or not we can still congratulate our new MP Damian Hinds and neighbouring MP's Jeremy Hunt and James Arbuthnot who all at least hold a convincing Conservative majority in their seats. more...

30th apr - What's On! newsletter - The launch of the Grayshott Community Plan on Wednesday evening in the village hall was very well attended indeed. A packed audience listened attentively to the excellent speaker from Buriton who explained how they had carried out the process, which they started 10 years ago, and list the many benefits that have sinced accrued to the village. Hearing all this one couldn't help wondering though how on earth Grayshott ever managed to achieve as much as it has without one of its own? more...

23rd apr - What's On! newsletter - Hope you had a good Easter break. Hasn't it all been happening in the last few weeks? Very exciting what with volcanoes erupting, aeroplanes grounded, square refurbishments getting underway, the Grayshott gardeners spring showings, and election fever breaking out with our potential leaders masterfully debating on TV. What do you reckon? Are we in for more of Gordon's gloom? Will there be an end to the contrails for some blue sky thinking? more...

2nd apr - What's On! newsletter - Anyone for Tennis? It wasn't exactly the predicted pythonesque blood bath, but the Parish Assembly didn't disappoint, with a good knockabout over the proposed sale of the tennis court land to fund a new pavilion dominating the open forum. The result? - well as the Haslemere Herald headline put it "Villagers give the pavilion plan the red card" but we'll have to wait and see if the Parish Council play ball at their next full meeting on May 10th. more...

26th mar - What's On! newsletter - The Annual Parish Assembly gets underway tonight at 8pm in the Village Hall and should be a lively affair. If you missed the Sports & Recreation in Grayshott exhibition there will also be another chance to see it at the back of the hall which is open from 7.30pm offering tea and coffee. I hope the vexed question of whether the tennis court land could or should be sold off for affordable housing to fund a new pavilion won't overshadow the entirety of the sport & recreation study. more...
|
19th mar - What's On! newsletter - Since the last newsletter the Sport & Recreation in Grayshott debate has gathered pace with a veritable marathon taking place on the messageboard - so thank goodness this weekend we can all rise to the challenge for Sport Relief. I have already been told off for last weeks missive where it appears I fell off the chain linked fence and lost my usual neutral objectivity over the pros and cons of selling the tennis court land to build a new pavilion, for which I apologise to all. more...

12th mar - What's On! newsletter - Tonight's the night when the latest Grayshott Panto is visited on an unsuspecting, hopefully pleasantly horrified, public. I hope you managed to get your tickets for the Rock'n'Horror Panto Show before they sold out, but if not there are still some left for the 2pm performance tomorrow at Grayshott Books - if you're quick. Tickets for Messiah have also nearly sold out with only a few remaining. . more...
|
5th mar - What's On! newsletter - It's just one week to go and you are advised to Book now for The Rock 'n' Horror Panto Show as tickets are selling fast at Grayshott Books for all three performances - 7.30pm Friday 12th and 2pm & 5pm on Saturday 13th March. Oh yes they are! This years panto - the 24th - has without doubt the biggest star studded cast ever and no less than 12 sensational songs guaranteeing an entertaining show for adults and children alike. more...
|
26th feb - What's On! newsletter - There are two important exhibitions being held this weekend, one on traffic calming and the other on sports & recreation, which in very different ways will affect Grayshott's future and so I recommend you find time to take them both in and most importantly feedback your views to the organisers. more...
|
19th feb - What's On! newsletter - It may have been wet, and the pancakes a bit soggy, but there was a good turnout for the races in the Square on Tuesday, particularly as this year coincided with half term. John Howard from the Co-op won the golden frying pan for the second year running and it was all great fun for young and old as the photos will testify. Radio 2 fans listening yesterday morning to the Popmaster music quiz on the Ken Bruce show heard our Grayshott postmistress Michelle Reidy taking part. more...
|
12th feb - What's On! newsletter - If you have ventured out of Grayshott this week you will have enjoyed the latest route change which now brings northbound A3 traffic from the Liphook onto the new A3 southbound carriageway in a contra flow system, starting just south of The Spaniard, and then up to the Hazel Grove intersection. The next phase is the construction of the new northbound dual carriageway which will take about six months. more...

5th feb - What's On! newsletter - No sooner had last weeks newsletter hit the ether, celebrating the disappearance of the snow, than more snow started falling, so I had better be careful what I write. If you suffered damage to your roof and guttering from the build up of snow and ice don't be taken in by rogue traders circling the district. more...
|
29th jan - What's On! newsletter - I think everyone who has been in to see the newly refurbished Fox & Pelican agrees that Fullers have done a great job. With the new cosy snug, exposed wooden floors, great decor and lighting and fabulous range of new furniture the pub now really has the 'wow factor'. On Tuesday night BIG members crowded into the Pub restaurant to catch up on the latest Grayshott news. more...
|
22nd jan - What's On! newsletter - After undergoing a major refurbishment the Fox & Pelican, as planned and despite the snow, reopens it's doors tomorrow at 11am and managers Kim & Mark are really looking forward to welcoming their customers back in to see the transformation. The new pub restaurant will also host the next BIG meeting on Tuesday at 6pm when local traders and organisers get together under the guidance of Dick Smith. more...
|
15th jan - What's On! newsletter - Wandering around the village on foot, as best as one can with the pavements heaped up with snow, it seems the honeymoon period after the white over is rapidly coming to an end. Even more so after a generous second helping came before the first course had been properly cleared. The white stuff though, has brought inspiration to many, spawning no end of podgy and dodgy snowmen and even the odd igloo or two. more...
|
8th jan - What's On! newsletter - First of all may I be the last to wish you a happy new year. Such a lot has been happening in the village since my pre-Christmas newsletter, but dominating the scene has been the snow - the likes of which Grayshott hasn't seen for generations. Every snow cloud has a silver lining and suddenly Grayshott's streets have been reclaimed by the many villagers who have been forced to leave their car in a snow drift and find our how much more versatile legs can be. more...
