Having missed issuing last weeks newsletter, as I was away on Haslemere Hockey Tour in Hulst, there is much to say in this edition, but if you can stay with me to the bitter end I can offer you the prospects of some firkinexcellent refreshment.
I'm also sending this out a day early just so I can let you know in time that you are invited to the The Square tomorrow (Friday) morning to meet our new local police constable PC Lucy Ryan who replaces PC Kirsty Langridge - she will be there from 10am to 12noon with our District Councillor Ferris Cowper who has organised this opportunity.
Rather frustratingly for everyone the Square refurbishment is still not complete as we now await the seating, which has also been delayed, and the rendering of the planters. Once everything is in place though we'll sort our some sort of opening do and you can be assured you'll be the first to know.
The A3 Hindhead Scheme by contrast is on schedule, but at £371 million you'd expect it to be, and by this time next year the bypass should be flowing. Before it's opened to traffic we will apparently all be given the opportunity to walk through the mile long tunnels at the 'Tunnel Vision Open Day' which will take place on Saturday 14th May 2011. The walks could be sponsored of course, and perhaps this would be a good opportunity to raise money for a worthy charity or the National Trust.
The info I'm receiving on impending local Road Closures has been a little unreliable but I now have it on good authority that the Headley Road closure mentioned in my last newsletter will not affect the village centre, much to the relief of our shopkeepers, and will only be from Crossways to Waggoners Bend and won't start until 25th October. Phew!
Whitmore Vale will also be closed to through traffic at Greenacre Farm from Sept 1st for 5 days for overhead cable works - note this is not Whitmore Vale Road which remains open for rat running and access to Golden Valley Poultry which later in the month is hosting this years St Luke's Church Harvest Supper on Sat 18th Sep.
In the news - the Grayshott Time Team aka Grayshott Village Archive managed to discover a time capsule hidden in the foundation stone of the old Grayshott Clinic which they rescued during its demolition. The contents of the 90 year old lode did not exactly match up to the splendours of the Staffordshire Horde and amounted to a miserly ten and three quarter old pennies and a copy of the Times - and someone had already done the crossword.
Create a Star is a new scheme launched by Sport Haslemere to help give aspiring young athletes the financial support they will need to reach their potential by attracting local business sponsors & benefactors to help them out in the lead up to the Olympics.
It's was good to see panto star Mike Pennick - was he Frank? no he was Stein - land a part in the next stagers production Dark Lucy. This is his second outing with the stagers after his performance as Brevis in Improbable Fiction This next one is a Hitchcock style thriller about an unpleasant old villager who lives in a dirty broken down cottage in the home counties. Hmm!
In business news The Gurkha Durbar have launched a new take-away service and menu with free delivery under 5 miles and 10% discount over £15 and if you plan to eat in just mention grayshott.com when booking and you'll get a 10% discount on your meal Sunday to Thursday. If any other local businesses would like to proffer discounts to our readers through these pages please apply.
Onto events and fans of Radio 4's Gardeners question time will be overly excited to hear that, after much pleading from the Grayshott Gardeners, the green fingered guru's are recording a show at Grayshott Village Hall on Monday 8th November. If you fancy being in the audience you'll need to arrive from 5.30pm for the recording between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are just £2.50 and will soon be available form Karen Flood and Grayshott Books and they will have a section for you to pose your questions to the 4 panel judges, the names of whom will not be announced until the night.
Now I know you will not be able to contain your excitement until then so let some of it out at Jekka McVicar's, UK's Leading Organic Herb Grower & holder of 62 RHS Gold Medals, talk on Essential Culinary Herbs on Wednesday 8th September. Members of Grayshott Gardeners go free and tickets for non-members are £5 and once again available from Grayshott Books
This Sunday weather permitting there will be a friendly six a side cricket tournament down at the sportsfield between teams volunteered from the village - a case of the BIG, the bad, and the ugly.
Next Wednesday BIG hold their annual charity Golf day at Hurtmore Golf Course - last year this managed to raise £1,200 - and this year we hope to break the course record.
Next Tuesday, being the last of the month, Binky's Dixie Demons return to the Social Club for another night of mayhem, they are also appearing at FirkinJazz along with the Vic Cracknell band on FirkinFriday and the Rollin' Clones at the FirkinFinale. If you are wondering what I'm Firkin talking about it's the second FirkinFest at Grayshott Village Hall on 29th/30th October with a firkintastic mix of beers & ciders and entertainment. FirkinTickets can be bought online and will be on sale at Grayshott Books from 1st September. If you fancy promoting your business perhaps you'd like to be a FirkinSponsor?
Now I'm sure you're dying to hear how tour went. We have a saying "what goes on tour stays on tour" and for good reason, but it wouldn't be giving too much of the game away to say that our tour theme was the 'Chocoholics', our strap line 'a pint no halves in every bar', and as usual Coco Pops was eaten for breakfast.
If you want to know more, see you for early beers!
