Dear subscriber
The polo last Saturday at Applegarth was most impressive. I don't think I've seen so many black top of the Range Rovers in one place before. Tom Benson is quite a star, rather stealing the show I thought, and it was just as well he'd elected to play for the losing side 'Work, Rest & Polo', who were outplayed in the end by home team Polo4, or it might have been a whitewash.
If you fancy taking a look at the 'sport of kings' or even having a go this Sunday there is a Polo Open Day at Applegarth from 1.30pm with a scrummy BBQ and bar and I highly recommend it as a way to spend a sunny afternoon.
I take it all back. After my grumbling diatribe last week on the subject of road works I trundled into the village and couldn't believe my eyes as I looked upon the pristine tarmac surface adorning Crossways Road, and not a single roadworker or road sign to be seen anywhere, and what's more they had used that new quieter tarmac, with added rubber, so I take my hat off to the tar babies.
Perhaps if I were to grumble on about the Square refurbishment it might have a similar transforming effect. I suppose it's worth a try, except that I'm rather pleased with progress and we have had confirmation this week that the major works should be finished by 9th August anyway. It appears some of the square traders have suffered a temporary loss of trade during the works so I hope you will make it up to them, especially when the new square arrives.
Before we leave the subject of roads there are more A3 grumblings. It's not the old Stoatwobblers this time but a co-ordinated criticism, by several key village groups, of Surrey County Council who appear to be ignoring their call to delay implementation of traffic calming measures in Headley Road until we have had a chance to see what the effect of the tunnel will actually be on traffic flows. This is all the more frustrating since Hampshire County Council have already seen the light and agreed to postpone similar measures to Crossways Road. Lets hope commonsense prevails.
Oh, and don't forget that for the next few weeks or so you won't be able to get to and from Hazel Grove via Crossways Road as they are closing the old A3 in between for narrowing and to put in a cycleway.
The Raku day at the Pottery went well with around 40 participants having a go at the Japanese smoking sawdust glazing technique under the watchful eye of Phil Wareham (right). So successful it was that they are already organising another one for the 2nd Oct. Perhaps these might now be done on a regular basis - sort of chain smoking.
The Shotts have won the Medstead Cup, beating Holybourne in the Final largely thanks to big hitter Danny Schwick who knocked 4 successive 6's. The Cricket club are organising a 6 a side fun competition on Sunday 29th August at the Recreation Ground where BIG Dick will no doubt be opener for the Buy in Grayshott team, assuming that he is not too busy organising the Charity Golf Day on Wednesday 1st September at Hurtmore Golf Club, that is.
We had a jolly good night at the Social Club last Tuesday with a very entertaining night of Jazz from Binky's Dixie Demons who have again been booked for the Saturday afternoon of FirkinFest. Also appearing this year on FirkinFriday 29th Oct is the very popular Vic Cracknell Band and the FirkinFinale on Sat 30th Oct evening stars the Rollin Clones. Tickets will be going on general sale at Grayshott Books from 1st Sep but if you can't wait you can now book online. FirkinTastic!
Now you may be making the mistake of relying on my weekly newsletters for all your local info but these missives are just but a sample of what's on offer if you venture online. All manner of posts can be found in the notice/message boards, jobs, sales and property sections, with latest additions on the homepage, and there is always the most important directory of local businesses and organisations that should be the starting point if you are looking for goods, services or interests to follow.
Rather sadly Movies in Grayshott has flickered it's last as Barbie & Steve and their committee concluded that falling audiences and increasing costs make it unviable. Well it was good whilst it lasted and many thanks to the dynamic duo and helpers for their super efforts.
That's all folks!
