Dear subscriber
By all accounts the Sunday Funday was a great success and enjoyed by one and all. The music from 'Sounds of Steel', 'Western Aces' and 'Something for the Weekend' went down particularly well and we were blessed with probably the best weather yet so the bar did a roaring trade to help pay for it all.
The carnival procession was a bit thin on the ground but when you look at the joy it brings to those happy little sunflowers it is well worth it. The Hill roaders once again pulled out all the stops and I think I still owe the WAGS a drink. There are already some photos of the day up on the web gallery and if you have any more please email them and I'll add them to the collection.
Just before I move on to other matters can I voice all our thanks to the hard working and inspirational Party in Grayshott committee and their army of helpers and the many local businesses that supported the day in one way or another and finally, as the opportunity was lost to me at the end of the evening, to say a big thank you to everyone that turned up to support this iconic village event.
Perhaps it was too much sun or post funday exhaustion but I'd swear I was watching England play Slovenia on Wednesday afternoon and we not only won but were rewarded with a fixture against our arch worldcup rivals Germany. Of course I then realised I must be dreaming because, when we turned over, these chaps were at 44 games a piece in the last set at Wimbledon - ridiculous I know! I had to pinch myself but I've yet to wake up.
So the midsummer nights dream continues... Germany then maybe Argentina or Mexico in the quarterfinals and who knows we could make the semi finals even the final. Steady...lets just focus on the match on Sunday, it'll be gruelling and they'll be no love's labour's lost between us and the Germans. Sunday should be the busiest day yet for the club & pub who welcome fans along to join the world cup party and to watch the match which kicks off at 3pm - get there early to get your towels down first.
Could you tell I was working up to the Shakesperience? There are still some tickets left and Peter & Vivien aka Grayshott Concerts promise us a magical evening at Applegarth on the 7th July combining a picnic, polo and a play wot he wrote from the Guildford Shakespeare Company. To go or not to go? that is the question.
The clock starts ticking at 7.30pm tonight for the Grayshott 24. The stagers are calling all adventurous, brave and intrepid folk out there. Well that counts me out. Peter Budd says "Be the Bear Grylls of the stage. Be at the Grayshott Village Hall at 7.30pm tonight when the specially constructed 24 hour countdown clock will be started and the show to be performed on Saturday will be announced. Within half an hour, without any auditions, the show will be cast. Rehearsals will then start and proceed through Friday evening, all through the night and the next day. Apart from the cast rehearsing, everything else has to sorted: props, costumes, set, etc. Then, come what may, curtain up will be at 7.30pm on Saturday, as the clock reaches zero. If you are not one of the brave souls then come along on Saturday evening and see how well (or not) we have succeeded. After all, England are not playing that evening so you have no excuse, and it's bound to be more entertaining than watching USA play Ghana!!"
I can add that if you don't like surprises and would rather find out which musical will be performed on Saturday night before you commit, I have a mole inside the organisation who will feed me the top secret identity of said musical when the envelope is opened at 7.30pm tonight and I will be spilling the beans on grayshott.com - just check back on the diary.
Blazing Saddles! If you are looking for something to do during the day there is a Summer Fair at the OK Corral, just around the back of Beacon Hill Primary School on the school field, on Saturday starting at 12.45pm. My mate Shelley, she's the one in fishnets dressed as a Saloon Girl, is looking to borrow some bales of staw (about 8) and a 6KwA generator to power the bucking bronco, so if anyone can help she would be very grateful - call her on 01428 606761 - yeehah!
Not previously advertised in the diary and also on Saturday night....Chinese soprano Chen Wang will be giving a concert at St. Luke's Church at 7.30pm. Using opera arias and music theatre songs she will be exploring themes of harmony and love in nature and man's relationship with the environment. Chen was a nationally known performer in China before coming to Britain to study Western opera at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Tickets are £10, £5 for children, and can be bought at the door, or from the St. Luke's office - 606703.
On a similar theme, and looking ahead to next week, Movies in Grayshott are showing 'Creation' on Wednesday which was postponed, I seem to remember, because of the snow. The film is about Charles Darwin and his struggle to overcome his own demons over the loss of a daughter and to keep the love of his deeply religious wife whilst in the meantime the scientific world is pressing him to complete his masterwork 'On the Origin of Species'. Poor bloke, no wonder he went off on a round the world cruise.
So have a good weekend yourself, whatever you decide to do. Sadly I'll miss seeing the Grayshott 24 as I've been invited to a Vicars and Tarts party with Pam. Surprisingly, I've not done this particular fancy dress party before so I thought I'd better turn to a local expert for some advice and maybe a few bits and pieces. Our vicar at St Luke's Church seemed the obvious choice and Moray was typically helpful, taking me through all the various options. I must say, and even though I was once a choirboy, it's all a bit of a mystery to me but anyhow, it's all's well that ends well, as he has kindly lent me a nice little pink number.
Come on England, yet again!
