Dear subscriber
Grayshott Scouts hold a Jumble sale this Saturday morning between 10am and 12noon in the Village Hall. So it's a good opportunity to have a rummage around the spare room, garage and loft and locate a number of old useless items to donate to the sale and at the same time create some space which will come in useful later as you return from the sale laden with a similar number of new useless items. It's all too much like shopping for my liking, but as on this occasion it's also about raising funds to help Rabbie McGowan get to the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year, I'll see if I can find him some luvly jumbly.
It seems like everyones doing the sponsorship thing at the moment and you have to admire the hours of training and physical abuse people are prepared to undertake in the name of charity. Annick Hollins for example bravely did the London Marathon recently for STEPS whilst recovering from major hip surgery, and two nice pairs of Grayshott gals walked the moonwalk through the streets of London in their bras last Saturday night. Of course they are all completely dotty but nevertheless deserving of our support.
It's been a busy newsweek, with no less than four items coming in today alone. I so enjoy receiving peoples news items to post on the website - many that never make it as far as the local papers - and it makes you feel proud to hear of the many achievements in little old Grayshott. For example;
It looks as though a future Jonny Wilkinson may be in the making at Haslemere Rugby Club as Grayshott seven year old Archie Wilson was awarded most improved player.
Did you know we have a multi-award winning national magazine publisher in Grayshott? Signature Publishing in Headley House who produce 'The Pony' - often to be seen at the Square pancake races - and 'Horse & Rider' have recently been nominated for the 'Maggies' for two of their other publications. 'Dinomite' - everything you wanted to know about dinosaurs, and their pre-school boys magazine 'Fantastic', will be up against heavyweights the BBC magazine 'Dr Who', and also 'The Beano'. Let's hope they can master the opposition and get at least one Maggie to put on the mantlepiece.
GalleryOne are running a Terry Frost exhibition at the moment showing a collection of his prints alongside works by some of the modern masters like Damien Hirst and Prince Charles. It's about time Grayshott produced it's own modern master, don't you think. Well, I can tell you that even now, whilst the paint is still tacky, we already have in our midst a modern master in the making - not Banksy but Batesy. Oh yes! And as the photo testifies Phil was indeed there at their champagne assisted opening night, eyeing up the competition and chatting up Marion, so surely it can't be long until we get invited to a debut exhibition of the modern master Bates.
And if that isn't enough creativity for one village it was potty time at Grayshott Pottery last Saturday offering would be potters an opportunity to master their art and play with clay for a day. If you missed making it with Myra, their next one is on 12th June and just in time for Fathers day.
That brings me to the Martin plays Mendelssohn concert. I was really sorry to miss yet another Grayshott concert and to hear Martin Smith master the violin concerto as undoubtedly he did. There was consolation though that my mother in law got to enjoy her first Grayshott concert, brownie points there I think, and I was later to hear the brilliant Callum Smart perform the same piece in the BBC young musician of the year finals only to be out played by the mesmorising pianist Lara Ömeroglu. I also got to enjoy the FA cup final and Beacon Hill beer festival - now I think I've just lost all sympathy.
It all goes a bit quiet for the next few weeks, not a great deal going on apart from Binky's Dixie Demons at the club next Tuesday, but before you know it we'll be into the World Cup and enjoying another Sunday Funday. How's that float coming on?
Have a masterful weekend.
