Anyone for Tennis? It wasn't exactly the predicted pythonesque blood bath, but the Parish Assembly didn't disappoint, with a good knockabout over the proposed sale of the tennis court land to fund a new pavilion dominating the open forum. The result? - well, as the Haslemere Herald headline put it, "Villagers give pavilion plan the red card", but we'll have to wait and see if the Parish Council play ball at their next full meeting on May 10th.
The work on the Square refurbishment starts in just a couple of weeks time, on the 19th April, with the removal of the bollards and brick raised flowerbeds and delivery of the stone. It will be a relief to see three years hard work, countless planning meetings and fundraisers finally come to fruition. Thankfully this project got the "green light" from our villagers and so early on gained the support and funding from Hampshire County Council through the Hampshire Country Towns Initiative Programme.
The transformation from grey 60's precinct to a stylish I'Anson Square will take just 12 weeks and shoppers and shopkeepers can be reassured that during this time contractors, Swanwick Civil Engineering, will maintain access to all the shops, although the lay-by will be put out of action from time to time to allow for deliveries, etc. The site manager will visit all the shops and residents the week beforehand to discuss any queries and thereafter any issues should be directed to the Parish Council office.
If you would like to keep a memento of the old square Pamela Lee has rescued the rose bushes and aconites - call her 604947.
If summer ever comes we are going to have a ball. The Grayshott Summer Ball that is, which has been coming and going for at least twenty years. It started out at The Links Hotel in Liphook then toured various gardens in Grayshott before the organisers hit upon the concept of a marquee share with our local private schools. This year, on the 10th July, we are again at Amesbury which is a delightful setting to posh it up in black & white and dance the night away to live music.
Co-incidentally I came across a music video called Boys and Girls by Amesbury School on youtube made to raise awareness and funds for CRY(Cardiac Risk in the Young). It's absolutely priceless and well worth a watch.
Easter weekend is almost upon us and Grayshott Club thought it would be a good idea to kick it off tonight with some Karaoke. A new venture at the club, Buttys Breakfast Bar, will serve up it's first fry-up tomorrow morning, and if it's a success every Saturday and Sunday morning thereafter. The BIG match tomorrow at 12.45pm is the Premiership top two tussle between Manchester United and Chelsea and there is mounting excitement over the delivery of a 10 foot widescreen next week especially with the World Cup around the corner.
This weekend would be a good opportunity to give the cook in your life a rest and enjoy a meal at one of our village restaurants. The Gurkha Durbar are offering a 10% discount to parties of four or more eating lunch or dinner during April and I'm sure all our restauranteurs will be equally delighted to see you.
Have a good Easter
