First of all may I be the last to wish you a happy new year.
Such a lot has been happening in the village since my pre-Christmas newsletter, but dominating the scene has been the snow - the likes of which Grayshott hasn't seen for generations.
Every snow cloud has a silver lining and suddenly Grayshott's streets have been reclaimed by the many villagers who have been forced to leave their car in a snow drift and find our how much more versatile legs can be.
One resourceful chap took to his skis to get to the village club whilst another lady was spotted (right) returning home with what shopping she could muster, from the panic stripped shelves of the co-op, on her sledge.
For a time it all seemed as though Grayshott had been transported to a carbon free pre-car era and perhaps for some the habit of always using the car rather than walking may be broken. I for one have always walked when I can and yet I have met more people down my road in the last 3 days than in the last 25 years. If that were the only effect of the snow one might be inclined to hope that all this could continue.
The down side has been the widespread disruption and risk of injury so it is worth keeping an eye on the regular Snow service updates from EHDC. Several Grayshott events have been cancelled and I'll endeavour to keep you informed via the website. St Luke's Church has decided not to run services this Sunday and the Grayshott Gardeners have called off their meeting next Wednesday.
To add to some peoples woes, those who could not make it in to work for example, they couldn't even take comfort in the village pub, which is closed for a few weeks for refurbishment. Those in the know made their way to the Social club in Hill Road which has remained open throughout making hay whilst the sun shines. And if you are tempted down there tonight for Friday early beers you will, as always, be more than welcome and also to stay on for the Karaoke and to return next Tuesday for the Jazz.
It seems an age since we all huddled together in the square to sing carols and you will be pleased to hear that £700 was raised through the collection. The intention is to distribute £400 to the Grayshott Day Centre and £300 to the Arthritis Care Grayshott both most worthy recipients.
A number of happy snappers have sent in their snowy photos and these can be viewed on our Flickr gallery any more would be welcome - just email them in - I am particularly interested to see who can capture the longest icicle. Now there's a challenge!
Until next weeks what's on - stay warm and stay safe!
