Dear subscriber
Weren't the Hidden Gardens of Grayshott just fabulous!
Last week I promised you more info on Al Gore's global warning film "An Inconvenient Truth" about global warming being shown on Saturday at the Village Hall.
Grayshott Gardeners, who visited Kew this week, know that our Climate is changing, our world is getting warmer with 11 of the 12 hottest years recorded having taken place since 1995. As a consequence Glacier and Polar ice is melting at an alarming rate and Sea levels are rising from melt water and thermal expansion.
And it looks pretty clear that this is down to the exponential increase in greenhouse gases from human activities - particularly carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels and cement production and the emissions of nitrous oxide and methane from agriculture and livestock production.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn this week produced the UK Climate Projections 2009 report (UKCP09) and told MPs that the UK climate will change even with a global deal on emissions and warned that by 2080, London will be between 2C and 6C hotter than it is now. "Climate change is going to transform the way we live," says Mr Benn. Not half!
MP's, it has to be said, seem far more interested in fiddling whilst the planet burns, so it is left to public opinion to force change and this is where the film comes in.
With wit, smarts and hope, "An Inconvenient Truth" presents the evidence for climate change and ultimately brings home Al Gore's persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue - rather, it is the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilization.
Seeing this film will make you care, and the free showing on Saturday is really a great opportunity not to be missed, thanks to Movies in Grayshott and Greening Grayshott and sponsor Phil Bates. Even if you have seen it before, as I have, it would be good to have your support on Saturday.
