Dear subscriber
Having spent your week beavering away inside, whilst outside all is glorious spring sunshine, you will not be surprised to learn that typically this weekend, your big chance to get out and enjoy it all, is set to be wet and stormy. So what has Grayshott got in store to brighten up the forecast and put some sun back into our sad lives?
Calcutta Cup - Victory or Black Hole?
Rugby aficionados will now be wondering whether England having just lost Cipriani to the dreaded drink can still clamber all over Scotland in the annual Calcutta Cup? They will also be worrying whether his replacement Balshaw, who albeit is a might sobererer than Danny boy, will when it comes to it, have the Cajonas? or will he drop them as usual as we fall into a full black hole? All this excitement, not kidding, will unfold on Saturday at 3.15pm - and those looking for some big match atmosphere could do worse than go for a pint and a half time pie at Grayshott Social Club.
All the other 6 nations matches (sat 1.15pm Ireland v Wales, sun 3pm France v Italy), FA Cup 6th Round matches (sat 12.45pm Manchester Utd v Portsmouth, sat 5.30pm Barnsley v Chelsea, sun 1.10pm Middlesbrough v Cardiff City, sun 6pm Bristol Rovers v West Bromwich) and Premiership matches (sun 4pm Wigan Athletic v Arsenal) will be shown at the club so there really was no opportunity to get outside anyway. On the Saturday evening at the club for a bit of excercise there is general knowledge quiz with fish'n'chip supper - all welcome.
Free Breakfast
There is no such thing as a free lunch, but, a free breakfast? that is another thing. The Fox & Pelican put one on last Saturday, yes really, and thanks to Grayshott's Early Morning Appetite and with help from local traders and Dick 'manuel' Smith raised £1,000 for Cancer Research UK. Well done everyone.
This Saturday evening at the pub is the ever popular local musician Charlie Beckerson who puts his own unique interpretation to another solo set of classic cover songs from a wide range of artists. Free entry and will definitely lighten up your life.
Hindhead Together
It's interesting to watch the tunnel works unfold and the Hindhead Together group are holding an Exhibition today and tomorrow at the Devil's Punchbowl hotel - well worth dropping in.
Devil's Punchbag
It's panto time next weekend - oh yes it is - as Jack and his Beanstalk take to the stage at the Village Hall along with a number of wacky characters sprung from the imagination of Diana 'Luvvy' Lovelock and directed by Jane 'Phoenix' Dawes.
Producer David Phillips tried to explain it all to me "Jamie Oliver (no worries he is not there) would not be happy with the food and drink Al Copop (Brian Archer) and his Hoods want to sell to the kids in the Devil's Punchbag, near Bindweed.
When Winn King (Mike Pennick), proprietress of the Milky Way Organic Café, is forced to sell Daisy her cow, due to suspected poisoning by farmer GM Crop (Andrew Smille), it looks like she has no choice but to close the café. The "magic-beans" Jack (Kate Smillie) receives for Daisy at the Meat Market flourish in the contaminated land creating a route for Al Copop's boys to descend from the giants castle with their stock of unhealthy wares in the hope of selling them through the café.
Where will the Bindweed Tunnel diggers be able to get their organic breakfasts, will the tunnel ever be finished, can the A3 still be saved? Will the Government Inspector (Brian Flounders) instigate one regulation too many? Can (or should, for that matter) Organic Tripe Delight ever be the basis for true love? Will Jack and Jill (Kate Mackie) really go up the hill together and what of the giant?"
Tripe indeed. Well the point of me telling you all this now is that if you want the answers, and goodness knows I can't now sleep at nights for wondering, tickets are already on sale at the bookshop and will sell out before you know it - if indeed they haven't already - so I suggest you stop reading this tripe right away and nip into the village smartish.
But before you go... if you're hoping for a glimpse at this years panto of those seasoned spring chickens that hatched onto the stage many blue moons ago (you know who), I'm pleased to say you will not be disappointed. Although they have for the time being flown the nest along with the veritables and may no longer be seen basking in the limelight, worry not, they are still there in more than spirit - just look behind you!
