SQUARE REFURBISHMENT DELAY
The stone for the steps at the front of The Square is coming from China and has been delayed but should arrive by the end of next week.
As this area is fundamental to the works the contractors may not be on site very much until this arrives.
We hope this will not delay the project too long.

BARED CYPRESS TREES IN THE SQUARE
The Parish Council organised the removal of the Christmas tree at the weekend (belatedly, due to the snow) and a decision was taken on site to remove the foliage from the conifers for the following reason:
There is a pair of pied wagtails which nest each year in the little cypress tree opposite the bookshop. The Square refurbishment scheme is due to start in the Square in April this year. By this time, these birds will be well into their second brood. As we understand, they do start quite early, so the 4 conifers were trimmed of their foliage just leaving the bare stem of the tree up to shoulder height as at Parish Council meeting we thought it would be less of a trip hazard for the few weeks until the contractors begin.
We hope this will discourage them from nesting as it is thought they would normally start to build their first nest by the middle of February, if the last couple of years are anything to go by, that is. It is a shame they won?t be able to use their usual tree but, at least by making sure it is not available early in the year, it will mean they will have to find somewhere more suitable.
The remaining trunks do not look very attractive in the meantime, but, in all honesty the conifers were not particularly appealing, unless of course you happen to be a wagtail!
Let's hope they find an alternative nesting site close by, but far enough to be undisturbed by the work due to start in April.

16th jul 08 - The Square refurbishment project has been accepted into the Hampshire Country Towns Initiative Programme and has been awarded £20,000 out of this year's budget and the services of a landscape architect, to draw up plans, conduct surveys and provide costings to enable us to seek further funding. We are also very hopeful of a substantial award from next year's budget and are currently awaiting confirmation of this. The Initiative are anticipating the installation of the scheme late summer/autumn 2009.
