COULD  YOU  BE  A  COUNCILLOR?

Grayshott has vacancies for volunteer

Parish Councillors from May 2011

Any residents over the age of 18 living in Grayshott or within 3 miles of the parish boundary are eligible.

It can be a challenging role, but the satisfaction of knowing you are actively helping to improve the quality of the Parish and to maintain the character of Grayshott cannot be overstated.

Ø       Join a team of Councillors putting something back into the community

Ø       Help influence decisions on parish matters e.g. keeping the Sports Pavilion in use; protection of the Conservation Area; local planning issues

Ø       Help administer our precept (or budget) of £60,000, along with the responsibility for several legacies and a trust fund.

Ø       Be involved in village amenities that require managing and maintaining e.g. The Square, allotments, skate park, playgrounds, sports field, Village and Lyndon Greens, War Memorial and flowerbeds

The minimum requirements in terms of time are one meeting per month, but we are seeking Councillors to take on roles with enthusiasm and commitment.  Training is provided

You would be joining the team at a very interesting time.  The coalition government plan to devolve decision making back to local communities, so we can expect many changes over the next few years.

SQUARE REFURBISHMENT DELAY

The stone for the steps at the front of The Square is coming from China and has been delayed but should arrive by the end of next week.

As this area is fundamental to the works the contractors may not be on site very much until this arrives.

We hope this will not delay the project too long.

Scheme set up for stray dogs

A new scheme has been launched by East Hampshire District Council to help reunite stray dogs with their owners.
Residents can now phone to find out if a dog has been reported missing before dropping it off at a kennel where it will be cared for until claimed by the owner.

If a stray is found residents are asked to check to see if the owner can be readily identified. If not they should phone the dog wardens at East Hampshire District Council on 01730 266551 between 9am to 5pm during the working week and they will arrange to collect the dog.

On weekends and bank holidays, between 9am and 5pm, residents should contact 07907 911069 to report found dogs and, if necessary, arrange to take them to Firhill Pets Hotel, in Liphook Road, Whitehill. There they will be scanned and, if a microchip is found, the owner will be informed. Stray dogs may only be delivered to Firhill Pets Hotel between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

Owners can also phone the above numbers to discover if a lost dog has been found. They will need to pay charges before the dog may be collected. Charges are publicised on the Dogs and Animals section of the EHDC website.
For further information about the new service, the dog warden service in general, or if you would like your dog microchipped by East Hampshire District Council, please contact Dave Griffiths on 01730 234360.

BARED CYPRESS TREES IN THE SQUARE

The Parish Council organised the removal of the Christmas tree at the weekend (belatedly, due to the snow) and a decision was taken on site to remove the foliage from the conifers for the following reason:

There is a pair of pied wagtails which nest each year in the little cypress tree opposite the bookshop. The Square refurbishment scheme is due to start in the Square in April this year. By this time, these birds will be well into their second brood. As we understand, they do start quite early, so the 4 conifers were trimmed of their foliage just leaving the bare stem of the tree up to shoulder height as at Parish Council meeting we thought it would be less of a trip hazard for the few weeks until the contractors begin.

We hope this will discourage them from nesting as it is thought they would normally start to build their first nest by the middle of February, if the last couple of years are anything to go by, that is. It is a shame they won?t be able to use their usual tree but, at least by making sure it is not available early in the year, it will mean they will have to find somewhere more suitable.

The remaining trunks do not look very attractive in the meantime, but, in all honesty the conifers were not particularly appealing, unless of course you happen to be a wagtail!

Let's hope they find an alternative nesting site close by, but far enough to be undisturbed by the work due to start in April.

Grayshott Community Plan: Your village needs you!:

The Parish Council would like to make an appeal for volunteers to join an independent steering group to produce a 'Community Plan' or vision for the parish of Grayshott.

The plan is likely to cover issues relating to: safeguarding open spaces; provision of services & local facilities; additional housing development; local employment opportunities; maintaining & enhancing the village.

Councillor Julie Bevis is the Parish Council representative for the group, and a resident who was involved in producing the Village Design Statement has also agreed to help with the plan. The Grayshott Community Plan Group is now looking for more volunteers to join them to enable the plan to come to fruition.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in helping to shape the future of their community. There is funding available for publicity, exhibitions etc. and the Parish Council believe this is a great time to ask the village about other facilities / improvements they would like to see in Grayshott.

If you are interested in joining the group, or for more information, please contact Liz Pennick, Clerk, or Emma Sleigh, Assistant Clerk at Grayshott Parish Council. E-mail grayshottpc@hotmail.co.uk or tel. 01428 606510.
