Neighbourhood Watch - Targetting Anti Social Behaviour

Please see below a message from Chief Constable Alex Marshall of Hampshire Constabulary regarding anti social behaviour.

All Safer Neighbourhood Teams are involved in targetting anti social behaviour this Summer and I would ask that you contact your local officers to see if there is any way that your local Neighbourhood Watch can assist in this initiative.

As you know working together is paramount and whether you can spare an hour to work with your Beat Officer or whether you pick up the phone to report something, your assistance is valuable.

A MESSAGE TO PARENTS

From Alex Marshall QPM, Chief Constable, Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Do you have children under the age of 18?

If so I would like to ask for your help. This summer we are running a campaign to reduce antisocial behaviour
and help everyone to enjoy the school summer holidays safely.

Many children have little adult supervision during the holidays and it could be easy for them to
unintentionally become involved in activities that could cause distress or annoyance to someone else. We are
also concerned about the number of young people who put themselves in danger – every year we are called to
incidents where children are jumping off bridges into rivers or playing ?chicken? in front of cars.

My officers will be carrying out targeted patrols to combat antisocial behaviour. We will be confiscating
alcohol from children and working with licensees to ensure that young people cannot buy alcoholic drinks.
Unfortunately my officers cannot be everywhere, so I am asking parents throughout Hampshire and the Isle of
Wight to help us.

I know that looking after children and young people during the school holidays can be difficult. However, I
think that most people will agree that we need to work together to reduce antisocial behaviour to make our communities
safer for everyone.

Should you have any queries about what your local Officers are doing regarding anti social behaviour please contact them directly.

Vehicle Security - 19th March 2009

Police in East Hampshire remind motorists to keep their vehicles secure

Police in East Hampshire are reminding motorists to keep valuables out of view and avoid becoming a victim of theft.

Vehicles are often targeted by thieves who smash open car windows or force open car doors. Common items such as Sat Navs, car stereos and MP3 players can then be stolen.

Officers have launched a campaign in order to reduce the number of cars targeted by thieves.

Police will be displaying a series of posters and handing out leaflets across East Hampshire to remind people of the risk of leaving valuables in their cars.

Inspector Laurie Rickwood, of Whitehill police station, said: "The simple advice to motorists is do not leave anything in your vehicle. If it's not there it can't be stolen.

Petrol stations throughout the district have agreed to display the posters and warning signs are also being put up in beauty spots and other locations that have been recently targeted.

We would also advise people to property mark their belongings, including their Sat Nav, stereo and CDs. If they are then stolen they can be easily returned if they are recovered.

Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Vehicles advice:

Don't leave anything in your car – if it's not there, then it can't be stolen.

Choose a stereo that can be removed and make sure you take it with you! You should also mark it with your registration number or postcode, in case it is stolen.

Thieves aren't picky, so don't leave even low-value items. Often thieves will smash and grab first and look later to see if what they've stolen is valuable.

Don't hide it – if you hide items under the seat or in the glove box, chances are someone will have watched you. If you cannot avoid leaving something in your car, put it in your boot before you begin your journey.

Don't leave valuables in your car even for a minute – it only takes a thief a few seconds to smash a window and get what they want, so don't take the chance.

Your car isn't safe on your driveway – nearly half of all incidents where items are stolen from cars happen when they are parked overnight, close to the owner's home.

Don't leave your house keys or anything with your address on it in your vehicle - someone could steal your keys and then let themselves into your home.

For more information about policing in your area visit the local policing pages of Hampshire Constabulary at www.hampshire.police.uk.

Neighbourhood Watch - Charity Collections - 18th February 2009

Information has come to the attention of Operation Liberal concerning door-to-door charity collections. Some charities conduct their own door-to-door collections whilst others contract with a third party to collect on their behalf. However the collections are made, the collectors should carry identification and the means whereby that identification can be verified.

Some charitable collections are made whereby the householder is encouraged to set up a direct debit for a monthly contribution.

If anyone has a similar experience please contact the Community Safety officer at Operation Liberal on opliberal@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk or 01623 608010.

Advice should be broadcast locally not to engage with any unknown or unexpected caller at the door and never under any circumstances give your bank details especially over the telephone, to a doorstep caller or to a street collector. If anyone from the community wishes to support a charity this decision should be made from their own conscience.

Neighbourhood Watch - SCAMS in the snow

It has come to my attention that in one part of the Midlands region Consumer Direct have received calls from worried residents (mainly older people) of opportunist traders cold-calling offering to clear drives of snow for £50.
The advice is
If the traders are making a cold call and offering goods/services costing more than £35.00 then they must give a written notice of cancellation rights. If these are not given they are committing a criminal offence and cannot legally demand any payment for the ?work? they claim to have done.
Remember the stop, chain, check message from the Home Office and if you are not expecting anyone then don?t open the door.
Householders should not be forced into making a quick decision on the doorstep. They should get at least 3 quotes from local reputable companies. Trading Standards ?Trusted Trader? schemes, Buy with Confidence schemes and other local recommended trader?s registers should be able to recommend a suitable trader.
Appeal to neighbours and neighbourhood watches to be good neighbours and keep an eye on elderly neighbours and relatives especially during this cold and snowy weather to ensure they are alright and do not need any help in clearing a pathway of snow or need any shopping.
As the snow covers most of the country I thought I would flag this up to you for appropriate local action.
