Scheme set up for stray dogs

A new scheme has been launched by East Hampshire District Council to help reunite stray dogs with their owners.
Residents can now phone to find out if a dog has been reported missing before dropping it off at a kennel where it will be cared for until claimed by the owner.

If a stray is found residents are asked to check to see if the owner can be readily identified. If not they should phone the dog wardens at East Hampshire District Council on 01730 266551 between 9am to 5pm during the working week and they will arrange to collect the dog.

On weekends and bank holidays, between 9am and 5pm, residents should contact 07907 911069 to report found dogs and, if necessary, arrange to take them to Firhill Pets Hotel, in Liphook Road, Whitehill. There they will be scanned and, if a microchip is found, the owner will be informed. Stray dogs may only be delivered to Firhill Pets Hotel between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

Owners can also phone the above numbers to discover if a lost dog has been found. They will need to pay charges before the dog may be collected. Charges are publicised on the Dogs and Animals section of the EHDC website.
For further information about the new service, the dog warden service in general, or if you would like your dog microchipped by East Hampshire District Council, please contact Dave Griffiths on 01730 234360.

DOG FOULING

It is widely accepted that dog fouling is socially untenable to allow a dog to foul and not to clear it up but we still receive regular complaints from around the district.

We are currently gathering evidence about numbers of dog fouling incidents but feel many are not being reported. To be able to put our resources into the right vicinity could I please ask you to inform us by email of any bad areas within your parishes.

I would like to thank you in anticipation of your help

BARED CYPRESS TREES IN THE SQUARE

The Parish Council organised the removal of the Christmas tree at the weekend (belatedly, due to the snow) and a decision was taken on site to remove the foliage from the conifers for the following reason:

There is a pair of pied wagtails which nest each year in the little cypress tree opposite the bookshop. The Square refurbishment scheme is due to start in the Square in April this year. By this time, these birds will be well into their second brood. As we understand, they do start quite early, so the 4 conifers were trimmed of their foliage just leaving the bare stem of the tree up to shoulder height as at Parish Council meeting we thought it would be less of a trip hazard for the few weeks until the contractors begin.

We hope this will discourage them from nesting as it is thought they would normally start to build their first nest by the middle of February, if the last couple of years are anything to go by, that is. It is a shame they won?t be able to use their usual tree but, at least by making sure it is not available early in the year, it will mean they will have to find somewhere more suitable.

The remaining trunks do not look very attractive in the meantime, but, in all honesty the conifers were not particularly appealing, unless of course you happen to be a wagtail!

Let's hope they find an alternative nesting site close by, but far enough to be undisturbed by the work due to start in April.

REFUSE COLLECTIONS

Recycling and Refuse Collections expected to be up-to-date by Saturday

Bin collections are expected to be up-to-date by next week after bad weather disrupted the service.

Veolia Environmental Services has been working hard on behalf of East Hampshire District Council to clear all refuse bins following the heavy snow and expect to catch up on all outstanding collections by the end of Saturday 23 January.

While many other authorities have cancelled all collections, EHDC and Veolia have worked throughout last week, including Saturday, to try and clear the back log.

Despite the crews' best efforts some streets have not yet received a refuse collection. However it is hoped this will be rectified over the next few days and that all collections will be back to normal by next week.

Collections will be made according to the following plan:

Residents with calendars 2 or 4 (or with an 'a' on their calendar) will receive their normal refuse collection this week on their normal day and recycling next week on the normal day.

Residents with calendars 1 or 3 will receive recycling collections this week, although it may be later than their normal collection day. Any refuse missed last week should also be left out and will be picked up by Wednesday 20 January.

Garden Waste, Glass and Clinical Waste are all being collected on your normal day. Any glass collections missed over the last two weeks will be cleared on your next scheduled day. Please put excess glass in a suitable box.

Every effort is being made to collect excess refuse during this time, provided it does not delay the crews. Please keep excess refuse to a minimum and ensure any sacks are securely tied.

Residents should have received their calendar in the winter edition of EHDC's Partners magazine. However they can check their calendar information at www.easthants.gov.uk.

Any further service updates will be reported on www.easthampshire.org/news.

The Prostate Project

CONFIDENTIAL HOTLINE FOR PROSTATE CANCER
INFORMATION AND ADVICE NOW AVAILABLE 24/7
0800 678 3168

Today sees the launch of a confidential telephone information
and advice service for prostate cancer. The new service round
the clock is being launched by Surrey based Prostate Project
charity. Its aim is to provide those, who may have been
diagnosed with prostate cancer, with the chance to discuss their
problem and how it may affect them.

Peter Seaton, a member of the Charity and prime mover behind
the setting up of this new service comments. 'Being diagnosed
with prostate cancer can seem like a death sentence. It is a
major shock to the individual concerned and a major worry for
his family.'

Our aim is to help men cope with the shock of finding out that
they have prostate cancer and to ease the fear of the unknown.
Those manning the service are all prostate cancer survivors and
so speak with first hand knowledge and experience. They are
able to talk in confidence about their own cases and give callers
information on the 'support and advice available' he adds.
The helpline is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Callers,
who are worried that they may have a prostate problem, but have
not been diagnosed, are also welcome to call as are family
members.

The Prostate Project is a registered charity established in 1998 to
support the Royal Surrey County Hospital, St. Luke's Cancer
Centre and Frimley Park Hospital. Since its formation, it has
raised over £1.2M, spent improving the care and treatment of
NHS patients with prostate cancer at Guildford and Frimley
hospitals. Funds are also used to further clinical research into
new prostate cancer treatments. The Charity has recently
expanded its activities to include hospitals in the Surrey & Sussex
NHS Trust.

SIR GERRY ROBINSON WANTS TO HELP YOU WRITE YOUR OWN WILL!

BBC logoHave you got a valid will' If so, you're in the minority.

Every day, over 1,500 people die in the UK, and more than 70% of them die without a legally valid will – a truly shocking statistic, which can lead to conflict amongst the remaining family.

Now one of the country's leading businessmen, Sir Gerry Robinson, wants to help change that. Assisted by expert legal advisors, he will help people to write their wills for a major new BBC2 series.

Sir Gerry is looking for families who might be interested in receiving free, expert help.

'It shocked me when I found out how many people in this country haven't written their will,' says Sir Gerry Robinson. 'I want to start raising awareness of this issue, and helping people put their estates in order.' Even those who have written a will may find it is out of date. 'If you wrote it twenty years ago, stuffed it in a drawer and forgot about it,' Sir Gerry points out, 'you may find that your circumstances have changed so much it no longer applies. And if you didn't get it properly witnessed at the time, it isn't valid anyway.'

Sir Gerry has helped families before on the BBC. In two previous series, he gave free advice to family-run businesses. 'My family is the most important thing in my life,' he says, 'but I know how complicated family affairs can be. It can be tempting to put off addressing issues like this. But in the long-run, that only stores up trouble. Would you rather write your will yourself, or have the government write it for you by default''

The programme's producers would like to speak to anyone who is having trouble writing their will, or knows someone who is – perhaps you know your own parents have been putting it off, and need help' Or a relative, or friend'

All calls will be in strict confidence. Please call the production team on: 020 7861 8068 or email them at: legacy@talkbackthames.tv

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

There are all kinds of reason why people put off writing their wills. Sometimes they have large families, or children by different marriages. Sometimes they aren't sure how to divide the family business, or how to make sure relatives with special needs are looked after. It can be a complicated business, requiring specialist help and advice.

But writing a will is important. If you don't leave a valid will, your estate will become subject to Intestacy Laws, which are impersonal, and won't necessarily leave your family properly provided for. Many people wrongly assume that if they die, everything will go to their spouse – not true. They often also forget just how many assets they have: insurance policies, cars, company pensions, and so on. And writing a will is the only way to name legal guardians for your children, if they are under 18 years old: otherwise, the State will appoint them. Without a will, all kinds of unforeseen and unwelcome consequences can follow.

In fact, this is a problem that is getting worse. Since 2004, disputes have trebled, according to one leading firm, Wedlake Bell, leading to estates being increasingly swallowed by legal fees.

GRAYSHOTT SURGERY
ONE DAY REDUCED OPENING

As some of you may know, parts of Grayshott, including ourselves will be without electricity for much of Wednesday 19th August.

The problem is made worse by the fact that we get very limited mobile phone coverage in the surgery and we are unable to hire a generator which would allow our equipment to run safely.

Because we will not have access to our computer records, heating, lighting or our usual telephone system we have reluctantly decided that we can only offer an emergency service on that day.

We will only have one telephone line coming in to the building so we would ask that you only phone if you have an urgent problem which must be dealt with on that day.

Our doctors will be at the surgery to see any patients who really need to be seen on the day as will our nursing staff.

Obviously we will not be able to process any repeat prescriptions so please make sure to put in your requests in good time.

We are really sorry for any inconvenience caused and hope that the impact on our patients is minimal.

Many thanks for your co-operation.
