17th dec - Don't miss Grayshott's BIGgest event this year! - Everyone loves Carol Singing at Christmas! And the biggest and best opportunity for miles around is Grayshott's traditional open-air carol singalong at 7pm on Christmas Eve in Grayshott Square. Last year, the event attracted almost a thousand people, dwarfing events in Haslemere and other towns and villages throughout the district. Once again, the singing will be led by Revd Moray Thomas, Vicar of Grayshott, accompanied by Laudate, with refreshments of hot chocolate and jam dodgers served by the Rezurgence group. 8th dec - Helping Hand for Grayshott Litter Hitters - Members of the Buy in Grayshott organisation were in the village recently, led by Dick Smith, helping to make Grayshott clean and tidy for Christmas shoppers. Grayshott Parish Council Chairman, Clive Slaughter was pleased to present the "litter hitters" with new bag holders donated by the Parish Council to make the job easier and said "The volunteers do a great job in the village and the Parish Council wanted to show its support for this wonderful community initiative." more...

3rd dec - Arthritis Care Grayshott Christmas Lunch 2009 - On the first day of December members gathered in the village hall, now decked out in its Christmas colours and with tables laid in seasonal red and green, for our annual Christmas Lunch. 18th nov - Scrooge is a 'Dickens' of an attraction in Grayshott - When community classical music promoters 'Grayshott Concerts' decided to stage Charles Dickens', "A Christmas Carol" at St Luke's Church at 7.00pm on Wednesday 25th November, little did they know how popular it would prove. Tickets for Britain's best known ghost story, featuring Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, have been eagerly snapped up for weeks and now only a few remain. "We're really glad we took a gamble on this amazing production," said organiser, Peter Harrison. "It's a heady mix of eccentric masks, wild puppets and an atmospheric set - with live music and songs making this fabulous story a great start to the Christmas festivities." more...

12th nov - The Rocky Horror Picture Show is Coming to Grayshott - At long last, a chance to see the ultimate sci-fi horror cult musical movie. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is coming to Grayshott Village Hall on Wednesday 25th November. Ever since its release in 1974 Rocky Horror has become, thanks to elaborate audience participation particularly on the midnight movie circuit, the definitive cult film of all time. When innocent newlyweds Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) seek shelter after their car breaks down in a storm, they find themselves made welcome in the home of transvestite Doctor Frank 'N' Furter (Tim Curry). 10th nov - St Luke's Church Delivers in Grayshott this Christmas - The Grayshott Christmas Card delivery service was launched this week by vicar of St Luke's Church, Moray Thomas (pictured right).
Moray said "Last year over 700 Christmas cards were delivered using the service which also aims to raise funds towards the running costs of the church."
Organiser Gordon Sanderson said "This year we hope to do even more! We will not be on strike and as for modern innovations to replace manpower we are the opposite - we as a Church are always hoping for more manpower!!" more...

9th nov - Arthritis Care Grayshott November 2009 Meeting - As Chairman Sybil Saunders was reading out members thanks for last months celebration of Lily Hubbard's 100th birthday, the lady herself arrived so we were all able to wish her belated good wishes as she had been unable to the October meeting. Members then joined in the congratulations for Sheila Dorsett who had recently been awarded an Advanced Food Hygiene Certificate. We were reminded that our next meeting on December 1st will be our Christmas Lunch which is at the earlier time of 12 for 12.30. more...

27th oct - Grayshott Pottery supplies Jamie's Italian in Guildford - Grayshott Pottery's commercial division, 'Grayshott Stoneware', made a local delivery this month, to Jamie's Italian Restaurant in Guildford.
The restaurant, which opened in early October, is located in a former bank in Friary Street. This circular building has gone through extensive renovations over the last few months in order to house the new celebrity restaurant. In the run up to the opening, Jamie's staff were busy taking delivery of kitchen and restaurant items, as well as the 'made to order' plates and dishes, which were created by the Grayshott business.

20th oct - Grayshott Stagers Improbable Fiction - The Grayshott Stagers next production is the comedy 'Improbable Fiction' by Alan Aykbourn. Six aspiring authors meet on a winter evening to discuss their work. Among them are writers of historical romances and children's literature who are finding it difficult to start writing and a crime writer who can't stop. A creator of extremely complicated science fiction, a librettist without a musical partner and the Writer's Circle chairman, who produces instruction booklets, make up the rest of the team. The chairman, Arnold, attempts to get the rest of the group out of a rut by suggesting they collaborate on a piece of writing, an idea that is received with-out enthusiasm. However, as Arnold is clearing up after the meeting there is a clap of thunder, a black-out - and then the story that would have resulted from the collaboration takes place before his very eyes. more...

17th oct - Acclaimed Grayshott Choir Goes Solo - Renowned for its sumptuous sound, powerful performances and great musicality, Grayshott's Chamber Choir 'Excelsis' has attracted many plaudits since its inception only a couple of years ago. Founded by Grayshott Concerts and their Director of Music, Robert Lewis, in 2007, the choir has already delighted audiences and critics alike in sell-out performances of demanding works with international soloists and top flight orchestras. Only recently they were the first amateur choir in Europe to perform Karl Jenkins' dramatic Stabat Mater in the presence of the composer himself who singled out the choir as 'outstanding!' more...

14th oct - From the Cornish Coast to Grayshott - GalleryOne in Grayshott will be hosting the first solo exhibition in Surrey, of work by the artist Alison Orchard. This provides a unique opportunity to view and purchase paintings from her latest collection which takes inspiration from the dramatic Cornish coast. Having spent much of her childhood visiting the Cornish countryside, Alison continues to sketch and paint in Cornwall, extending her ideas onto canvas, from her studio in Beacon Hill, Surrey. 8th oct - Happy 100th Birthday Lilly Hubbard - This was definitely a case of 'best laid plans', firstly a special celebration had been planned for Lilly's 100th birthday which is actually on Oct 22nd, unfortunately the guest of honour was not well enough to attend but we celebrated anyway! Then, as Chairman Sybil Saunders explained, our planned Speaker Joan Tubbs was also ill, Sybil had rearranged dates and Faith Powell, who was due to speak in February, was to step in but then she had an urgent hospital appointment and had to pull out. more...

7th oct - Boundary Walkers Make it Home Much Refreshed - Gordon Sanderson reports "The Boundary Walk was blessed with great weather and 150 walkers completed the circuit. As Dick Smith was away we had no significant lost walkers. Signs were in fact better and were often complimented. The route was also slightly shorter and easier but one walker who I brought back from Whitmore Vale by car would have given a small fortune to the Scouts for the taxi service. more...

28th sep - Murder-Mystery Clue to Saving 'Undershaw' - In true Sherlock Holmes style, a murder mystery evening was held on the 27th August at the Devil's Punchbowl Hotel, Hindhead to create public awareness of the need to save Undershaw, the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The evening was attended by over 70 guests, which included actress Julie T Wallace who starred alongside Patricia Hodge and Dennis Water in the 1986 hit drama 'The Life and Loves of a She Devil'. more...

23rd sep - St Luke's Church's Babies - Marianne Loder (26) spoke movingly about her work with abandoned babies in Uganda at St Luke's Church in Grayshott on 18 September. Marianne had just returned from doing voluntary work at a Christian orphanage 'The Watoto Bullrushes' in the heart of Kampala where she had looked after seven babies singlehandedly! Marianne's babies were Blake, Eva, Ella, Charlotte, Nakato & Babirya (twins) and Precious. Four of the babies were orphaned. The other three had lost their mothers at birth but their fathers are still active in their lives and are making a stable home for the babies to return to once they reach 2 years old. The orphanage currently houses 130 abandoned and/or orphaned babies who are brought there by the local police. more...

22nd sep - Dream Comes True in Grayshott - After years of planning, a dream came true for a Grayshott woman when Beethoven's Symphony No.3 (Eroica) was performed in St Luke's Church last Saturday. The occasion was Grayshott Concerts "Eroica" event, in association with Buy In Grayshott (BIG), performed by the New London Sinfonia under conductor David Gibson for an audience of over 300. Concerts' artistic director, Vivien Harrison, was overjoyed. "Ever since our first concert in 2004, I've dreamed of putting on a Beethoven symphony, but there simply hasn't been enough room for the almost forty musicians needed. And now at last we've done it! "With our new staging, St Luke's can now present much larger classical works by Mendelssohn, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and of course, Beethoven. It's so exciting." more...

21st sep - Double Banger for Kaighin & Daughter - It was a double celebration for Kaighin & Daughter, the family owned butchers shop in Grayshott, as they achieved two firsts in both sections of the supreme sausage competition at this years Haslemere Food Festival. In the traditional section they won with their locally famous Herbie Sausage and for the speciality section they created a Pork, Stilton and Celery sausage which proved a real winner with the voting public. more...

Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Lea de Lonval, a famed courtesan on the verge of retirement. 17th sep - Food Adventures Begin at Applegarth - A series of "Food Adventures" with superb evenings of gastronomic entertainment are starting at Applegarth this Friday 18th September. The evenings kick off with a glass of champagne and a 30 minute food demonstration from chef and food expert Guy Wolley (pictured right). A light hearted look at how to create some fantastic dishes, Guy is well versed in this field.In 2002 he became a presenter with Good Food Live, on UKTV Food and continued as the show's deli expert until the show came off air in 2007. 10th sep - BIG Charity Golf Day raises £1,200 - Forty Players competed in last Wednesday's BIG Charity Golf Day. The competition was very fierce with some incredibly good scores. Following the afternoon of golf, Hurtmore Golf Club put on an extremely good 3-course meal during which there was also an auction. Organised by the Buy in Grayshott campaign and sponsored by the village pub, the Fox & Pelican, all prizes and auction items were donated by local businesses. more...

3rd sep - New kilns for old at Grayshott Pottery - Grayshott Pottery has taken delivery of new machinery to its commercial arm, Grayshott Stoneware. The new machinery, which comprises a new kiln, a Dorst roller machine and a polishing machine, had to be craned into the Pottery over its roof, in order to find its place in the busy factory. 'We bought the refurbished equipment from the oldest pottery in the UK, the Spode factory in Stoke on Trent', said Ed Snell. more...

26th aug - Have a Go Pottery Day a Success - Last weekend Grayshott Pottery opened its doors to a constant stream of 'would be pottery throwers', when the company held their first 'Have a Go' event. On Saturday afternoon around 40 people took to the wheel to create their own pots and sculptures and many were so delighted with the outcome that these out-coming works will be now be glazed and fired. more...

25th aug - Cricket is the winner in Village 6s - On the same day as England regained the ashes, the Grayshott village 6s were taking place for the third year in succession and what a great day it was. Cricket was the winner with some excellent games of cricket being played and more importantly lots of fun. The event organised by Andy Wheble and Ken Williams was a great success supporting the Club's chosen Charity Macmillan Cancer Support. more...

7th aug - Arthritis Care Grayshott August 2009 Meeting - Chairman, Sybil Saunders, opened the meeting by telling us about Hampshire Open Studies, 15th to 30th August. You can visit artists and craftsmen at work throughout Hampshire and brochures were distributed with all the information. Sybil then introduced two new members, Joy and Diana. Several members were too unwell to attend and Sybil suggested friends might like to visit them. Mrs Elsie Russell then gave us a fascinating insight into the many mistresses of Charles II. more...

6th aug - Fancy getting your hands dirty this summer? - Staff at Grayshott Pottery are offering their customers the opportunity to get their hands dirty this Summer and to create something 'on the wheel'. The Pottery, that can create up to 2000 items a day and regularly makes for the High Street restaurant trade, still practise the art of hand throwing on a day to day basis. 31st jul - Grayshott all set for 'Eroica' its biggest orchestral event ever - With six weeks still to go, Grayshott Concerts reports that everything is on course for their biggest ever orchestral event - thanks to their new staging. Chairman Anthony Ramsden explains: "Now that we have such a big stage, we can present major works which just weren't possible at St Luke's before. Beethoven's Symphonies need an orchestra of almost 40 musicians and now we'll be able to put on one of his best known and most epic works - Symphony No.3 (Eroica)." The concert features the return of the New London Sinfonia under conductor David Gibson, already well known to Grayshott music-lovers. The programme will include one of Mozart's most popular works, the delightful Flute and Harp Concerto. 25th jul - Grayshott Publishers Highly Commended at Industry's Oscars - Clive Foskett, Chief Executive of Grayshott based Signature Publishing Ltd was Highly Commended in the Publisher of the Year category at the recent Periodical Publisher's Association (PPA) Awards, the most prestigious event in the magazine publishing calendar. The award was presented to Clive at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, at a glittering 1920's themed awards ceremony hosted by comedian Dara O'Briain, attended by more than 900 delegates from the publishing industry. 24th jul - Karl Jenkins new Patron of Grayshott Concerts - Grayshott Concerts have just announced that Dr Karl Jenkins has kindly agreed to become their Patron. Artistic Director Vivien Harrison said "This is a huge honour for us all and for the village of Grayshott. Karl is considered to be the most successful contemporary composer of classical music and in 2004 entered Classic FM's 'Hall of Fame' at no 8, the highest position for a living composer. We are thrilled to have brought two of his most epic works - 'The Armed Man' and 'Stabat Mater' - to St Luke's Church. These moving compositions have been performed in venues both large and small around the world, and the CDs have sold in their millions. This delightful part tile hung semi-detached cottage, situated right in the heart of the village was the home of the late Peggy Askew; a long term resident of Grayshott. 20th jul - Grayshott Gardeners Summer Show 2009 - The Grayshott Gardeners' Summer Show took place on Saturday 11 July in the Village Hall. The rain which fell steadily throughout the day (but regrettably not in Cardiff) would have been appreciated by the exhibitors if it had fallen in May and June when the rainfall was only just over half the long term average for the area. 7th jul - Arthritis Care Grayshott July 2009 Meeting - Chairman Sybil Saunders welcomed members to the July meeting on a typical British summers day ie it was raining! Then with great sadness announced the passing of Peggy Askew who had been an enthusiastic member for many years and had managed to join in many activities well into her 90s with the help of her many friends. Our Speaker for this meeting was My Ian Whyte of Balfour Beatty who we all know are responsible for building the 'Hindhead Tunnel' . However as Ian explained the tunnel itself is just a part of a very complex solution to the traffic problems of Hindhead.more...

6th july - Movies in Grayshott - "A Bunch of Amateurs" - Wed 15th July - On Wednesday 15 July 2009, Movies in Grayshott will be showing the film chosen for the 2008 Royal Film Performance A Bunch of Amateurs. Jefferson Steel (Burt Reynolds) is an ageing Hollywood action hero, He?s vain, insecure and out of work. In a final attempt to find Jefferson work, his incompetent LA agent stumbles upon the perfect role playing King Lear at Stratford. But Jefferson arrives in the UK to discover that instead of an RSC production, he is booked to tread the boards with an amateur dramatic society in the sleepy English village, Stratford St John. And now on Saturday 11th July at 7.30pm, the St Luke's team have succeeded in attracting an exceptionally talented performer to Grayshott with his one-man show "An Audience with Jonathan Veira". Mr Veira fits the Grayshott audience particularly well. 13th may - It's Now or Never for Grayshott - As the multi million Hindhead Tunnel project moves towards completion Grayshott villagers wonder how they will be affected. Villagers have been told that funds are available for a scheme to reduce traffic speeds on the two roads, which lead to and from the A3. At the last Parish Assembly villagers were told that these funds must be spent before the tunnel is completed; without waiting to see what the impact of the tunnel will be. more...

13th may - Arthritis Care Grayshott May Meeting - The theme for our meeting this month was 'Fire Safety' and as Chairman Sybil Saunders welcomed members she reminded us of our early history lessons when we learnt how Stoneage men lit fires and the terrible tragedy of the 'Great Fire Of London'. She read a passage that described in graphic terms how this fire spread so rapidly from Pudding Lane in 1666 that eventually it spread to 10,000 homes and caused £10 million in damages. more...

23rd apr - Peter Clapham Awarded for Services to Sport - Peter Clapham a true stalwart of Grayshott Cricket Club recently collected an award for "Services to Sport " at the 2009 Hampshire & IOW Sports Awards held at the Rose Bowl. Peter was nominated by his club and along with over 200 people enjoyed had an enjoyable evening at the home of Hampshire Cricket. Winners of the awards across sixteen different categories from all sports, including Olympians, from town or city clubs in Hampshire. Peter was the only representative from a Village Club and was delighted to collect the runners up award. more...

21st apr - Have You Displayed Your Greening Grayshott Card? - Following on from the successful launch in March, the Greening Grayshott campaign team will soon be taking on the challenge of estimating the carbon footprint of Grayshott. All households and businesses in Grayshott have received a commitment card which lists 10 ideas to save energy and money at home and at work. Many of the challenges are quick and easy to do, for example turning off lights when you leave a room or not leaving the tap running when you clean your teeth. At the launch, the cubs demonstrated that leaving the tap running uses around 12 litres or 21 pints of water! (But at the end of the demonstration they did have very clean teeth!) more...

20th apr - Historic Grayshott - Possibly the oldest house in the village - Keats Estate Agents in Grayshott are delighted to offer for sale what is reputed to be one of the oldest houses in Grayshott. Sherwood is understood to date back to 1830 and was a former Coaching Inn on the London to Portsmouth route. In later times it became the Hindhead Temperance Hotel until eventually being divided into three, of which Sherwood is a southerly facing portion. more...

8th apr - Grayshott Stagers invite you to "Spend Spend Spend" - Spring 2009 sees the Grayshott Stagers' retell the story of Viv Nicholson in the musical 'Spend Spend Spend', with a book and lyrics by Steve Brown and Justin Greene and music by Steve Brown. In 1961, Yorkshire housewife Viv Nicholson won £152,319 (estimated to be worth between £3 to £3.5 million today) on the football pools. When a reporter at the time asked her what she planned to do with her new fortune, she replied, "I'm going to spend, spend, spend!" which is exactly what she did. Her rags to riches to rags again story takes her through five husbands, expensive sports cars, fur coats, and jewelry, a battle with alcohol, and bankruptcy as, unable to cope with her new-found wealth and fame, she rapidly spirals downward. more...

17th mar - Red Leg Day for Comic Relief - There were red noses and red legs on show at Grayshott Pottery this week as staff raised £300 for Comic Relief. The sponsored leg waxing and "dress up" day took place in the decorating room and viewing gallery area of the Pottery and sponsorship of the event came from its café customers and Grayshott Pottery staff themselves. more...

16th mar - Mid-Week Movies Comes to Grayshott - The newly re-launched Movies in Grayshott will be showing their first mid-week film on the evening of Wednesday 25 March 2009, doors opening at 7.30pm. The first of these mid-week films is Easy Virtue, staring Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Barnes.

13th mar - Grayshott Gardeners Have Fun With Fuscias - John Hitchcock and David Abbott, of the Woking Fuchsia Group, arrived at the Grayshott Gardeners meeting on Wednesday 11 March armed with a collection of fuchsia plants and various, mostly essential, items for growing and propagating this well loved plant. The speakers favoured a practical demonstration rather than a slide show, since they said they were well aware that the latter is more likely to induce sleep than enlightenment. more...

3rd feb - Arthritis Care Grayshott Annual General Meeting - Having had to cancel the February meeting due to the snow it was encouraging to welcome a large gathering of members for this meeting which was also our AGM. Unfortunately the community bus bringing some of the members broke down so Chairman Sybil Saunders began by giving out some notices in the hope that the bus would arrive shortly (it didn't!) We had been asked by the Parish Council to bring the 'Greening Grayshott' initiative to the attention of our members. more...

18th feb - Chairman's Civic Day comes to Grayshott - Over thirty Mayors and dignitaries' from all over Hampshire visited Grayshott Pottery this week as part of East Hampshire District Council Chairman, Marjorie Harvey's, Civic Day. Grayshott Pottery's Managing Director, Ed Snell, welcomed the distinguished guests with a brief history of the Pottery's 50 years in the business and explained how the pottery provides ceramics to High Street catering brands, as well as to many famous restaurants in and around the UK. more...

3rd feb - 2008 Best Dressed Shop in Grayshott Awards Dinner - Last night (Sunday 1st February) saw the exciting finale of the awards for the best dressed shop in Grayshott. Judging is done twice a year, in the spring period and during the winter period, with marks awarded for cleanliness, shop display and general shop appearance. With several inches of snow on the ground and more forecast Chairman Sybil Saunders made the sensible decision early on Monday to cancel the meeting. 16th jan - Famous composer to visit Grayshott - It's been an open secret in Grayshott for weeks, but now it's official! One of the worlds most famous and successful composers of classical music is to visit Grayshott in March at the invitation of Grayshott Concerts.
The occasion is a concert by Grayshott's Excelsis Choir accompanied by the Grayshott Festival Orchestra conducted by Robert Lewis and features a major work by the composer, premiered in March 2008 in Liverpool Cathedral followed by a tour of major UK venues, with the composer conducting. The work is a setting of the 12th century christian text "Stabat Mater" more...

11th jan - Arthritis Care Grayshott January Meeting - Firstly Happy New Year to all our members, especially those that braved the freezing temperatures to get to the village hall for our first meeting of 2009. One of the casualties of the weather was the mini bus which usually brings quite a few people but on this occasion was cursed with a flat battery. However all was not lost as they did manage to arrive later in the afternoon. more...

1st jan - Philips House Development Planning Application Lodged - The Grayshott Society wish to inform villagers that the proposed development at Philips House, in the garden of No 1 Beech Hanger End and on the green in front of No1 has now been submitted by Drum Housing.
