Over a hundred villagers turned out to the 'Gurkha Square Bash' in Grayshott Village Square on Sunday 13th September to enjoy a superb three course meal laid on by the Gurkha Durbar Nepalese restaurant and some special Square dancing.

This event, the latest in a string of themed lunches in the Square, was organised by the Grayshott Square Group to raise funds towards the £200,000 refurbishment project being planned for the Square during the spring 2010.

The guests arrived and enjoyed a pre-lunch aperitif before taking their seats. After a seemingly endless selection of spicy starters were distributed by the helpful waiters, diners were invited up to a mouth-watering buffet provided by the Gurkha Durbar manager Santosh and his staff.

Fully laden, diners returned to their seats, which together with the tables were kindly lent out by Grayshott Village Hall and laid out under the tents provided by Party in Grayshott which had been festooned with the red and white of the Nepalese national emblem.

After the main course Dick Smith expertly auctioned a 'Khukuri', the traditinal knife worn by Gurkha soldiers, donated by Sudha and Mani Rai owners of the Gurkha Durbar, which went to the highest bidder, Frances Flounders for £400. In addition a raffle was held with many prizes donated by local businesses. It is hoped that these together with the profits from the meal and the bar raised around £1,500 for the cause.

A highlight of the afternoons festivities were the five beautiful dancing girls who, in traditional Nepalese dress, entertained the party-goers with their barefooted dancing routines, which irresistibly culminated in staff and guests joining in with their 'Square dance'.

Colin Thompson chairman of The Grayshott Square Group thanked Sudha and Mani, Santosh and his staff and the girls for putting on such a fabulous day, the many volunteers who helped organise and set things up, and everyone who had come along to support the fundraiser.
