Consultation on draft Conservation Area Character Appraisal and related proposals

Grayshott is one of 43 conservation areas in the District. The central commercial heart of Grayshott was designated a conservation area in 1991. Each conservation area is now being reviewed through the preparation of a character appraisal. This process is based on national guidance.

Purpose and Objectives of the Character Appraisal

~ To clearly identify what it is about the character or appearance of the area which should be preserved or enhanced, and set out the means by which that objective is to be pursued.
~ Make recommendations for extensions or reductions to the boundary of the Conservation Area where appropriate.
~ Make a clear assessment and definition of the area's special interest and the action needed to protect it.
~ Improve the understanding of the historical context and generate awareness.
~ Encourage sympathetic enhancements and provide guidance for future development, planning policy and practice in the area.

Exhibition

A small exhibition accompanies this consultation and can be viewed at Grayshott library between 8 and 25 September 2009. Tuesday 10am -1pm and 2pm - 5pm
Thursday 10am -1pm and 2pm - 5pm
Friday 2pm - 7pm

Views sought

We would like to receive comments on the Character Appraisal from those who live, work or have an interest in the area. Particular attention is drawn to the key recommendations, namely:-

~ The proposal to extend the conservation area to include a number of additional properties in Headley Road, together with other minor adjustments to address present anomalies.
~ The tightening of planning controls to cover smaller scale changes to houses which cumulatively can easily erode the very character which makes the area special. The mechanism and process are detailed in Appendix 5 of the Appraisal.

Comments should be received by 16 October 2009.
