On such a glorious day for our annual summer buffet lunch it was sad that Chairman Sybil Saunders started her welcome with the news of the passing of two regular members; Eileen Walsh and Toni Mann but she urged everyone to enjoy the day in their memory.
On a happier note it was announced that at this years East Hampshire Award ceremony for volunteers two members of our committee had received certificates - Joan Sims has been our Treasurer for 7 years and Phyllis Cherriman has been in charge of Catering for 5 years, members congratulated them both.
After Grace by our President Peter White, members were invited to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch including a wonderful selection of deserts and a glass of wine.
Following lunch we welcomed the entertainment for the afternoon. 'Two In Accord' - Shirley Varenne and Bill Perkins are the two remaining members of what was once a 14 strong accordion band based in Worthing, what an impressive sound they must have produced. We were grateful to members David and Brenda Brown for suggesting them.
The next hour was filled with a variety of music from around the world, including, Blueberry Hill, Yellow Bird, a Can-Can, Lambeth Walk, Lets All Go Down The Strand and some old favourites that everyone could sing along to When You're Smiling, Ain't We Got Fun, Baby Face and I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover. An Irish jig and finally The Bluebell Polka had everyone clapping and tapping their feet as well.
After thanking Shirley and Bill, Sybil also thanked all the committee for making the afternoon happen with special thanks to Carol Hampshire for her beautiful flower arrangements and Sheila & Phyllis for the food. The table centre flowers were being sent to those who couldn't attend due to ill health - Mary Sheldon (long time member), Secretary Shirley Williams, Elizabeth Hastilow, Brenda Petrie, Heather Williams and Pam May.
Our next meeting is on Tues 7 July when our Speaker will be Ian Whyte of Balfour Beatty telling us about the Hindhead Tunnel project.
