East Hampshire District Council is delighted that a small-scale development of affordable housing is to be provided in the village of Grayshott to address the housing needs of some local people.
This year will see the completion of two houses and two bungalows in the village. Following development funding of £196,000 from the Housing Corporation, Drum Housing Association started on site in January at Beech Hanger End. All properties will be two-bedroom and for affordable rent.
This latest housing development to be announced continues the council's commitment to affordable housing in rural communities. In 2006/7 East Hampshire provided 134 affordable homes, both for rent and part rent/ part buy. This figure is expected to be exceeded in 2007/8.
Cllr Ferris Cowper, Leader of the Council and Councillor for Grayshott, commented "I'm delighted that for the first time in about 20 years we are getting new affordable housing in Grayshott. With the escalation in house prices we have to look after not just the elderly who may need help with subsidised housing but, increasingly, our younger folk who can't get on the housing ladder.
"Although Grayshott seems to be a very affluent village we have a waiting list of 46 people with a local connection who need to find a permanent place to live. I think this is unacceptable. This project begins the process of reducing the size of that list," he added.
Natalie Meagher, Housing Development Manager, explained ?Working in housing we recognise how challenging it is to provide affordable homes for local people, particularly in rural areas. This scheme is an excellent opportunity for Grayshott?.
