It has been 12 years since a Grayshott Youth team tasted League success, but on Sunday their U9 Lions side beat reigning league champions Guildford by three runs in a pulsating final at Churt to win the Alan Staves Cup.

In an excellent game, a credit to both sides, it was Grayshott who held their nerve in the final over with Guildford requiring 6 runs to win. Grayshott?s Keir Robinson bowled a tremendous final over to win the game for Grayshott.

Guildford won the toss and put Grayshott into bat. Good batting combined with some excellent running saw the Shotts make steady progress. Partnerships of 31 (Richard Smart & Raveen Sriharan), 29 (Charlie Sawyer & Wesley Pusey), 25 (James Smith & Harrison Ward) and 22 (Keir Robinson & Calvin Bandi) helped the Shotts on their way.

Guildford bowled and fielded magnificently but all the Grayshott batsmen contributed to a respectable score of 214 for 5

In reply, Guildford got off to good start and kept the scoreboard ticking over. They were well on their way and things were not looking good for the Shotts after 7 overs when the score was 141. However the 8th over from Tom Bussell turned out to be an eventful and crucial one. He grabbed 3 wickets in that over and the Lions could sense something was to happen.

Raveen Sriharan then grabbed a wicket in his first over with the help of a brilliant flying one handed catch by Charlie Sawyer. The Shotts captured another wicket before Tom Bussell returned for his second over in which he took another 2 wickets. An inspired spell of bowling it was. However Guildford proved why they were one of the best teams around. They kept things alive until the last over when they required only 6 runs to walk away with the Alan Staves Trophy for the second year.

The Shotts gathered themselves and prepared for the one final onslaught. They set themselves on the field with lots of thought and in came Keir Robinson for the last over. An exceptional over it was too, backed up by some brilliant work by the fielders. Keir kept his head and bowled an over of good length and line and Guildford were able to get only 2 runs off it leaving the Lions to roar to a well deserved 3 run victory.
