On 9 October 2007 John Lennon would have been 67 years old. To mark the occasion, GalleryOne, will be opening an exhibition of his limited edition lithographs, serigraphs and copper etchings, hand-reproduced from his original drawings. The work is taken from the 'Bag One Portfolio', his wedding gift to Yoko Ono in 1969. The drawings are a chronicle of their time together; their wedding ceremony, honeymoon and plea for world peace 'the bed-in'. Drawn by one of the most important cultural figures of our time, these illustrations celebrate human love and communication - two themes at the heart of John Lennon's contribution to the twentieth century.
The private view evening at GalleryOne, will kick off on Tuesday 9 October with live music to take you on a nostalgic journey back to the sixties. At a launch of Lennon's work in New York, Yoko Ono commented to the New York Times 'I don't think most people know John's artwork,' she added 'But you know, John started as an artist. He studied at the Liverpool College of Art, which was a difficult school to get into. Then he fell in love with rock'n'roll, and the rest, as they say, was history.' GalleryOne are not expecting this exhibition to be as controversial as it was when first launched at The London Art Gallery in January 1970. After one day of exhibiting Lennon's artwork, the exhibition was closed by Scotland Yard under grounds of obscenity and several of the more erotic lithographs were confiscated.
The 'Bag One Portfolio' of original sketches is now part of a permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The GalleryOne exhibition will contain over eighty pieces from the print collection including hand-pulled serigraphs reproduced from Lennon's original hand-written song lyrics, including the sought after 'Imagine' lyrics. Also on display are the newly released editions of 'Imagine Peace', 'War Is Over (If You Want It)' and the hand-written lyrics for 'Happy Christmas'. This is a rare opportunity to view Lennon's print collection in the UK. The exhibition provides insight into the life of a legendary man, who died tragically on 8 December 1980, but whose philosophies and perspective still live on through his music and art.
The John Lennon exhibition at GalleryOne continues until 27 October, is free to visit and all work is available for sale.
