Seasons are no respecters of dirt, dust and grime so when St Luke's Church Grayshott's Council decided it was time for a 'Spring Clean', Summer proved as good a time as ever.
Leading the St Luke's team of 'grime-stoppers', known locally as the "Holy Dusters", is Elizabeth Hardy. "We called for volunteers and over sixteen people turned up to to help", she said. "However hard we work at our weekly sessions, there are always some corners we can't manage to reach", she added. Church Warden, Gill Pain was delighted that so much had been achieved. "It's only when we need to get up to the rafters or clean the huge windows that we really appreciate how large our church is. It's wonderful to have so many helpers to tackle the task and to restore the sparkle to those hard-to-reach places" she said.
Fellow Church Warden, Geoff Kerr agreed, "It needed a few cool heads when working up the ladders and on the ledges" he said. "We take Health and Safety very seriously so I'm delighted it's all over for another year."
Between them, the team managed to clean 10 complete leaded stained glass windows, polish 20 rows of pews, access 40 rafters, lift and vaccuum 60 metres of grating and dust almost 100 metres of piping.
Vicar of Grayshott, Revd Susan Wing thanked everyone involved. "St Luke's looks really beautiful and welcoming. It was well worth all the effort."
