Grayshott Fire Station is pleased to announce the winners of a poster competition, launched by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's Schools Safety Team. Pupils at Grayshott Primary School were invited to create a poster advertising the Station's upcoming Open Day, which commemorates 100 years of operational fire and rescue service in Grayshott.

Students were judged on age and ability, with prizes for the competitions winners generously provided by Grayshott Pottery. In 3rd place was Sebastian Whitby, 2nd place was Jo Marshall, and taking the grand prize for 1st place was Alex Whitby.

Grayshott Fire Station's centenary open day starts at 10:00 on Saturday, 23 June 2007 - with numerous fire appliances for all to see, old and new, as well as specialist equipment such as an Aerial Ladder Platform and Incident Command Support Unit.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's Urban Search and Rescue Team will also be in action, whilst the Extrication Team will perform a simulation road traffic collision where they will cut a live casualty out of car. This specialist team has proven itself to be one of the UK?s finest at vehicle extrications and is currently ranked 6th best in the world.

Visitors to the Station will experience a range of Community Safety displays, including a chip pan fire demonstration. Another attraction set to draw in the crowds is the Fire Simulation Unit where members of the public can safely encounter the conditions of a smoke-logged room. Further displays will include the Ladies Driving Challenge and an exhibition mapping the 100-year history of the fire and rescue service in Grayshott.

To mark the centenary's grand finale, a village procession of all the vehicles will take place at 13:00, which opens the popular annual Jamboree in Grayshott - a family affair with a fairground and lots of local stalls.

Grayshott Primary School's Headmaster Jon Hills said: "This competition was particularly appropriate as it fused Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's fire safety programme with an exciting local event. For us this is a vital ingredient in demonstrating and educating how essential agencies work as an integral part of a community programme."

Phil Bates of Grayshott Pottery added: "We were delighted to sponsor this competition, as the open day and annual jamboree are vibrant important events for the community of Grayshott."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's recruitment team will be present at the open day, with their exhibition unit to attract interested firefighters in the North East Hampshire area. The Service is looking for local people who want to make a commitment to working with their own community and saving lives by joining the Retained Firefighter teams. Retained duty system firefighters earn money 'part time' in the service which can be ideal for people working locally or for parents who have some spare time during the day.
