Members of Grayshott Society held their first AGM last week. The Society which was founded in the Autumn of 2006, sets out to seek the protection and improvement of the amenities and appearance of the village and to help to deliver the vision as described in the Village Design Statement. It will also lobby for improved design in new development.

Much of the work of the society to date has involved working closely with many of the village groups as well as Grayshott Parish Council, and Chairman, Amanda Haddon-Cave opened the AGM proceedings by outlining many of the Societies activities to date.

These included a proposed extension of the Conservation Area and a Signage Audit both of which are already underway and the Grayshott Society is now pressing for full public consultation over any planned Village traffic calming proposals.

Mrs Haddon-Cave said, "We are pleased that our vice Chairman Phil Bates is also a member of the Square Committee and is involved in creating a new vision for the Village Square". Amanda went on to say that the Society has already been occupied with many planning issues and that the Committee had recently had a seminar on planning matters organised by East Hampshire District Council.

The Grayshott Society is organising blue ceramic plaques which are being made and kindly donated by Grayshott Pottery. The plaques are to celebrate famous village residents, such as Flora Thompson and the group plan to commemorate more in the future, including writer George Bernard Shaw, who was resident at Blencathra, now St Edmunds School.

Following the Chairman's report, questions were invited from members, and a lively discussion took place. One question posed was "What of the future"

Chris Vardy the Society's Secretary summed this up by saying "We imagine more of the same. We plan to continue our impetus to protect and enhance Grayshott Village".

The Society welcomes new members. If you would be interested in joining please contact our member Secretary, Mary Seabourne on 01428 607423 email maryseabourne@aol.com
