The owner of Grayshott's recently opened Sea Raj restaurant, Don Kamali, is starting a campaign to raise much-needed funds for charities through restaurants. As a first step in this campaign, he is donating one pound to a selected charity for every meal served in the Sea Raj during the Festive Season. At the same time, he will be encouraging other restaurants in the area to follow his lead, select a charity and join the campaign. His Chosen charity is the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham.

"I believe we should always bear in mind those who are less fortunate than ourselves and there's no better time than during the Christmas period – a time to put money where the mouth is", suggests Don Kamali. "A restaurant is a place for diners to enjoy themselves and we profit from providing that enjoyment. And so I decided that during December, we would give £1 for every meal we serve and at the same time, invite our customers to match the donation."

"I hope other restaurants will join me and grow DonATE into an on-going annual giving campaign, eventually, perhaps, being nationwide", he adds.
Don Kamali, a London Cockney of Bangladeshi origin, comes from a long fishing heritage. As a Londoner, he has been unable to follow the family tradition of being a fisherman. Nonetheless, he still has the family ingrained passion for fish. For as long as he can remember, starting by learning the traditional techniques from his mother, he has cooked fish.

Today, he is one of the few chefs specialising in the delicate and varied flavours of Bengali fish cuisine. Many dishes, whilst common in India, have never been placed before the sophisticated pallet of the great British diner. Virtually every town in the UK has an Indian restaurant, but until today, not one offers simply seafood. To open the first one therefore became Don Kamali's driving ambition – hence the Sea Raj in Grayshott, Hampshire, the first dedicated Indian seafood restaurant in the UK. Now, three months after opening, the Sea Raj is proving to be a popular addition to Grayshott life.
