Grayshott Scouts Join Worldwide Rededication

Scouts, Cubs, Brownies and Beavers of the 1st Grayshott Scout Group parade their Colours at Gibbet Hill Hindhead as part of the worldwide 'Sunrise' Centenary celebrations and simultaneous rededication
At the stroke of 8 o'clock on the morning of Wednesday 1st August, members of the 1st Grayshott Scout Group joined hundreds of thousands of other scouts worldwide in an historic, poignant and simple ceremony of rededication.
In the bright morning sunlight, 23 members of the Group including Scouts, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers, paraded their Colours at Gibbet Hill Hindhead to honour their Founder, Robert Baden-Powell, and to retake their Scout Oath in unison with their fellow Scouts in 216 territories and countries around the world.
The brief but solumn moment commemorated exactly 100 years to the minute when at 8.00am on Thursday 1st August 1907 Robert, later Lord, Baden-Powell, blew his kudu horn to open the world's first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island, mixing together 20 boys from a wide variety of social backgrounds. During their 8 days together, they learned how to survive in the wild and how to live by a code of honour. The movement has since grown a 'millionfold' and now promotes the values, benefits and achievements of Scouting to make a real difference to the lives of others. Over the years, countless boys and girls, men and women have enjoyed outdoor pursuits, dedication to service to others and always to "Be Prepared".

Local Group Scout Leader Karen McGowan, said: "It's a great privilege for our team to be part of such a successful worldwide movement, bringing together young people of almost every race, religion and culture with a common purpose to enjoy adventure while learning dedication to duty and service to the community."
The 1st Grayshott Group, was taking part in just one of the activities of their Centenary year in the area. Their greatest challenge comes later this year when, on Sunday 23rd September, the Group stages its own "Boundary Walk" along eight miles of paths and bridleways around the village.
The Scouts will not be walking themselves, because they will be on duty doing all the preparatory work, marking and marshalling the route. The walk is planned for the public to enjoy - with two start points and plenty of help and refreshments on route. Anyone who would like to take part and enjoy the scenery is invited to enter and the organisers will provide all the paperwork for those wanting to use the event as a means of raising sponsorship money.
"The novelty about this event is that although organised by the Scouts - walkers can raise sponsorship money for whatever cause they choose" said Gordon Sanderson Chairman of the Grayshott Group "It's a wonderful way to promote Scouting and to help people to support their own project. We won't object if they make a donation to commemorate our movement too" he added.
Registration and Sponsorship forms can be downloaded from www.boundarywalk.org and more details fom Gordon Sanderson - 01428 605819.
