Grayshott celebrates 60 years of Arthritis Care

It was wonderful to welcome so many members, friends and guests to Grayshott village hall on Tuesday 3rd April. This was a special party to celebrate 60 years of Arthritis Care and members had been invited to bring a friend and enjoy a free tea.

Our club has been running in Grayshott since 1992 as Chairman Sybil Saunders reminded us as she introduced speaker Josie Dew. "Travels On A Bike" was the subject and this bubbly young lady described how she had started cycling when she was ten and was so keen that she took the long way round to school - 25 miles instead of a mere 10!

Thus started a truly lifelong passion as she left school at 16, hitched a trailer to her bike, and went up to London offering a catering service. Illustrating her talk with unusual slides she recounted the trips she had taken literally all over the world, often on her own and the wonderful people she met, (apparently Japan and Iceland are the safest places for a lone traveller). I for one, was left wondering how exactly it was possible to cycle across deserts! But we were left in no doubt as to how she answered the "call of nature" as she showed us how she used a cycling cape to keep her modesty, this particular description drew a lot of laughter from the audience. At the end of her talk members were invited to look at the various books she has written of her adventures.

Sybil then welcomed our official guests - Rev Susan Wing, Clive Slaughter from the Parish Council, Desmond Thomas, our auditor with his wife Sheila, Peter and Pam Hatch who do so much for the community of Grayshott and our much valued drivers Trevor and Derek

Everyone was then urged to use their brains in a version of Pictionary and a quiz before they all enjoyed a special tea. Founder Member and Past President, Anthea Lockley, cut a beautiful cake specially made for the occasion by Pam May and thanked all those involved in running the branch.

Drawing the raffle, Sybil wished Margaret Miles a happy birthday, thanked all the committee and helpers for organising this special day with special thanks to Carol Hampshire for the table decorations and Sheila Dorsett for the food. Member Leila Walker also thanked the committee on behalf of all the members.

Several members brought friends and we hope they will come back and see us again. For membership information please call Shirley on 01428 643625
