Grayshott's New Smokeless Zone

Grayshott Social Club has this week reopened it's main bar area after major redecoration and would like to invite members, old and new, to come in over the Christmas period to enjoy their new NO SMOKING bar. This is at present the only smoke free bar in Grayshott (and for quite some distance around) and so is likely to become quite popular.
There is a varied programme of entertainment nights at the club and recent sell outs have included Bobby Davro, the Upbeat Beatles and the Rollin' Clones. On Christmas Eve there will be a free Disco, on Monday the 27th at 2:30pm a children's panto "Cinderella", and on New Years Eve a ticket only Cabaret Night and Buffet Supper, all these events available to members and their bona-fide guests only.
The social club has good games facilities with teams in snooker and darts leagues who play each week. There is also weekly quiz & bingo nights and plenty of raffles. The bar has the usual full range of drinks to offer including guest ales from the Hogs Back brewery and if you are not a member or have never visited you will be very welcome to drop in and "Nick" the bar steward will explain how easy it is to join.

MP beats litter-bugs and fills BIG bags in Grayshott

Members of the Buy In Grayshott Campaign (BIG) received a helping hand on Saturday 13th November 2004 when their MP, the Rt Hon James Arbuthnot, Shadow Secretary of State for Trade joined them on their regular six-weekly litter pick day.
Adding an extra splash of colour on a cold but sunny autumn afternoon, the Grayshott litter hitters, wearing their new high-visibility yellow jackets, set off with their new 'trainee' to scour the village for ugly litter, cans and discarded packaging.
The BIG litter-picking team were also supported by District Councillor Ferris Cowper and Clive Slaughter, Chairman of Grayshott Parish Council together with other local residents. "Grayshott is a marvellous community," said Mr Arbuthnot. "No wonder the village won the national award for 'Business in the Community' for England and Wales in 2002. It's good to see so many businesses and residents working together to improve the environment."
"We are delighted that James Arbuthnot, our MP, is helping us to get the anti-litter message across to litter-droppers." said team leader Peter Harrison. "If everyone could remember to take their litter home, we would win awards with the village every year"
After filling their bin bags, the team and helpers were rewarded with complimentary coffee at the Fox & Pelican.

MP joins BIG to ban litter in Grayshott
North East Hampshire Member of Parliament Rt Hon James Arbuthnot, Shadow Secretary of State for Trade, is so impressed by BIG's regular litter picking patrols that he has decided to join in.
So next Saturday 13th November, he will join other members of the Buy In Grayshott litter picking team helping to keep Grayshott spick and span for shoppers, residents and visitors. The BIG litter pickers helped Grayshott to win the Hampshire Village of the Year Award in 2002.
Team Leader Peter Harrison explains, "To make the job easier and more fun, we'll be using our special new litter picking tongs and wearing eye-catching high-visibility jackets. We hope everyone will notice and take care to avoid dropping litter in future."
MP James Arbuthnot and the team will start work on Grayshott Village Green at midday on Saturday 13th. "All helpers are welcome to join in to help us get this important anti-litter message across" said Dick Smith, BIG Coordinator. "Grayshott is a very attractive village and we all want to keep it that way."

Almost a year in the planning, the concert brought together the Occam Singers accompanied by the New London Sinfonia Orchestra together with guest organist Nicholas O'Neill under their Director of Music David Gibson.
The programme of Baroque music included works by Handel, Purcell and Boyce together with highlights from 'Messiah'.

"This was an excellent programme performed with great enthusiasm and charm" commented Gordon Blacker. "A fantastic concert, very much appreciated by all the Applegarth Farm Shop clan" added Will Benson, another sponsor.
"The whole evening was very enjoyable. We can't wait for the next event", summed up the comments of the audience after a cheque for £3000, raised by the concert, was presented by Dick Smith, Coordinator of BIG, to The Reverend Susan Wing, Vicar of Grayshott. "The Concert was a wonderful curtain raiser for our St Luke's Patronal Festival weekend", said Susan Wing. "On Sunday, Bishop Ian, Suffragan Bishop of Dorking, dedicated our Centennial Window, marking 100 years service in the Parish of Grayshott."
Organiser Vivien Harrison of Business Friends said, "I'm overwhelmed with the support we've had from the audience and especially from our sponsors. It was a complete sell-out and we're already planning our next BIG Grayshott Concert."
Almost half the audience attended special pre-concert suppers donated by the Fox & Pelican pub and the Kapadokya Restaurant. The Grayshott Lights installed by BIG were switched on specially, to add additional sparkle to the evening.

Grayshott Goes the Extra Mile

Over 80 runners turned out at the Sportsfield in Grayshott on Saturday 10th July from all ages to run the mile in aid of Sport Relief '04. The weather was fine for most of the morning and everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion.
Organised by Ken Williams on behalf of Grayshott Cricket Club in conjunction with BIG (Buy in Grayshott) the event has already raised in excess of £650 with some sponsor money yet to be collected.
The feature of the morning was the RED SOCK relay between Grayshott Cricket Club Under 20s, The Social Club, The Fox & Pelican, and BIG.
Although the Cricket Club Under 20s won the event, it was one of the those days when everyone who took part were winners.

Harold Langrish Trophy

After being mothballed for some 16 years, the trophy presented to Grayshott Cricket Club in memory of Harold Langrish (Captain of the Grayshott II winning Miller Cup XI in 1925) was played for again this season. It was used for six years in the 1980s when the Single Wicket Competition was run, and will now end up as a proud memento in the possession of one of Harold's daughters, Joan Baker or Betty Clapham. With their respective husbands Gerald and Peter now in the twilight of their careers after nearly 100 years of service to the club and local cricket between them, a special match was played on Sunday 6th June.
The two stalwarts competed in a match Gerald Baker XI v Peter Clapham XI together with both of their cricketing sons backing their fathers in their attempt to win the Harold Langrish Memorial Trophy. The match was played on an excellent batting pitch with over 400 runs being scored in an 80 over match, which went to the last over.
Batting first the Baker XI soon lost opener Paul Roberts, but this only brought the in form Phil Judge to the crease to share a 100 run partnership with Andy Lang (40). The introduction of Gary Clapham into the attack broke this partnership but Phil Judge still managed his second successive fifty of the weekend.Neil Sampson then played a solid innings of 36 not out, sharing useful partnerships with the aggressive Andy Wheble (27) and Mark Sobey (36). The Baker XI finishing on 219 for 8 off their 40 overs, with Matt Haywood picking up 2-27.
The Clapham XI response was similar losing opener Gary Hunt early on bringing James Tomlinson to the crease to share in a 100 run partnership with Matt Haywood. Both went to score half centuries but the introduction of Andy Lang picked up both wickets in quick succession. This brought Gary Clapham and Alistair Lindsey Clark together who shared a run a ball partnership. Both missed out on their fifties going for the big shot leaving Under 15 players Chris Brophy and Robbie Judge to score the winning runs in the last over.
A true testament to the Grayshott stalwarts of Peter Clapham and Gerald Baker that so many of the former youth players all batted so well.
Club President Geoff Tribe presented the Harold Langrish trophy to the winning captain Peter Clapham after the match followed by a big round of applause to Betty Clapham and Joan Baker daughters of Harold Langrish and wives of the Grayshott Captains for the excellent spread of food that was laid on.
Several friends and Vice Presidents of the club turned up to watch the game and an excellent day was had by all.

BIG AUCTION RAISES OVER £4,000 FOR THE A3 APPEAL
The Buy in Grayshott group held a very successful Banquet & Auction at the Fox & Pelican on Sunday evening, raising a fantastic £4,105 towards the A3 Appeal.
At the end of a most enjoyable evening BIG Co-ordinator, Dick Smith, announced the fantastic news to rapturous applause from the 4 dozen or so dinner guests and the many villagers that had turned up to take part in the auction. Dick thanked everyone for coming along to support this vital fundraising event and also those who had contributed the many items for auction. Dick especially thanked Auctioneer, Dave Cook, who over two hours expertly and entertainingly sold the 76 lots and also Gillian Rawcliffe for both her efforts at getting many of the items and the work she did on the evening.
The Fox & Pelican very generously donated the superb 5 course banquet for the event and many thanks were expressed by the dinner guests to publicans Claire & Dave and to all their hardworking staff for looking after them in such style.
Dick was obviously delighted with the result and said later "When we see such enthusiastic support for this event coming from the villagers is it any wonder Grayshott was awarded best village in Hampshire and best village for "business in the community" in England & Wales.
This brings the total funds raised so far for legal representation at the A3 Public Inquiry to an amazing £47,465 and of course the biggest thanks must go to "BIG" Dick himself for masterminding the whole event and achieving such a wonderful result.

BIG's BIG Event for 2004
It's a great disappointment for the whole village that PIG 2004 will not run this year. Nothing could replace PIG, but the "Buy In Grayshott" Campaign is putting on something completely different . . . .
BIG's BIG event for 2004 is for everyone who loves classical music (and even for those who aren't quite sure!)
A Grand Classical Concert - "Concert in Grayshott" is to be staged at St Luke's Church on SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER 2004.
The event will be run in aid of St Luke's, which for over one hundred years has been at the very heart of the village and the people of Grayshott, providing support for everyone - carol services, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals and a host of other good works for members of the community - however strong their beliefs.
BIG members decided that a special event should be held to raise funds for its upkeep, with the considerable costs of mounting such an occasion to be borne by sponsorship and donations from BIG members and private supporters. The takings from ticket sales will go to St Luke's.
The response has been astounding and sponsorship is already flooding in. Phil Bates, Managing Director of Grayshott Pottery, the main sponsor, said "I'm really excited about backing this great new initiative. A concert like this will go down well in the village and I'm confident that it will be well attended." Other sponsors backing the event include Macphersons Burley & Geach, Kapadokya Restaurant, Business Friends, ClientFinders, Applegarth Farm Shop, Magical Rooms (opening shortly) and the Fox & Pelican, who are putting on a special two-course pre-concert supper with profits going to St Luke's.
The event is the brainchild of BIG member and business owner Vivien Harrison who is the concert organiser. "We are aiming to put on a programme of choral and orchestral music which goes straight to the heart" said Vivien. "Much of the programme will be well known, including Handel's "Hallelujah" Chorus and other highlights from the "Messiah", but we are also including some less well known pieces because they are so instantly attractive and ideal for St Luke's - Handel's delightful Organ Concerto "The Cuckoo and the Nightingale" for example."
The programme also includes two resounding "Coronation Anthems" by Purcell, believed by many to be England's foremost composer of all time, together with a lively Symphony by William Boyce, a contemporary of Haydn.
The choral works will be performed by the OCCAM SINGERS, known for their work in raising funds for local causes, and will be accompanied by the NEW LONDON SINFONIA ORCHESTRA, conducted by their Director of Music, David Gibson.
Flyers for the event will be distributed during April. Tickets at £12.50 for the concert will be available at GRAYSHOTT BOOKS from 1 May 2004 and tickets for the Supper at £12.50 will be available from Dick Smith (01428 608666) from 1 May 2004
If you would like to support the event through programme sponsorship or a personal donation, please contact BIG Coordinator, Dick Smith (01428 608666) as soon as possible. If you would like any further information about the concert, please contact Vivien Harrison (01428 607700).
So put the date in your diary now! "Concert in Grayshott" at St Luke's on SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER 2004 at 7.30pm.

PIG 2004 CANCELLED
Last year's "Party in Grayshott" was again a great success and thousands of local people came to enjoy the relaxed party atmosphere and a fabulous variety of entertainment. You can see photos from the last four PIGs on www.grayshott.com
It was not all good however as the growing popularity of PIG drew in a very large number of young people from outside the local area. Many of these had no intention of joining the festivities but came simply to get drunk and cause trouble. They formed a massive gathering in the central car park and around Grove House but kept away from the party area so most people were largely unaware of their disruptive presence. The Police however had to deal with their drunken, violent and threatening behaviour and suffered physical assaults and abuse. There was a considerable amount of vandalism, broken glass and several attacks on local people as they made their way home.
This situation is totally unacceptable and the PIG committee have since been in consultation with the Police to try and avoid a repeat of last year's problems. We have concluded that the safest option is to cancel this year's event altogether in the hope that we can break the cycle, come back next year and make a fresh start with a more village-friendly event.
Of course it is a great shame that we will lose a much loved event this year and it is sad that we have become yet another victim of the drunken yobbery that is affecting the safety of our streets nationwide.
On a lighter note, we will be putting on the Pyrotechnics in Grayshott in November as usual and we would welcome any ideas for other events you would like to see in Grayshott.
Some ideas suggested so far include a Sunday afternoon village picnic on Lyndon Green and a live band night or a beer festival in the Village Hall, so please let us have your ideas and any comments you may have about PIG events.
