ARTHRITIS CARE GRAYSHOTT

DECEMBER 2007 MEETIING

Once again, as is usual, our December  meeting was a special occasion as it was our annual Christmas Lunch. As members began to arrive for the early start they were greeted by a really festive scene with bright red table covers and flowers arranged by Carol Hampshire. After a welcoming glass of sherry or fruit juice we settled down to hear the Chairman’s opening remarks.

These contained both happy and sad news – Anthea Lockley, a founding member, was presented with a gift in recognition for her efforts in our branch for over 15 years. Sybil had been trying to make this presentation for several months and was very pleased that Anthea was able to attend to collect it this time.

Also some more good news, those of you who remember Linda Reading and the hard work she put into Grayshott, will be pleased to know that she is to be a grandmother for the first time in the new year.

Then sadly the news that Cliff, husband of our Secretary Shirley, died on Saturday. Although he had not be in good health for many months, this was very sudden, members held a moments silence followed by Grace from our President Peter White, after which as Shirley had requested, the party continued on a happier note.

After a lunch of chicken with seasonal trimmings and choice of deserts it was time for the Chase Singers, under their conductor Roger Wells to entertain us. As usual they did this with beautiful harmonies and a collection of traditional music including Marie’s Wedding, Scarborough Far, a nativity poem and one by Pam Ayres. They finished their excellent programme with some favourites from the 20’s and 30s which were much appreciated by our audience and included The Virgin Mary Had  A Baby Boy, A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square and Bye Bye Blackbird.

The Chase Singers perform locally and their concerts are well worth a visit if you get the opportunity.

Now if anyone had any room left, tea and shortbread were on offer as the raffle was drawn and Sybil had a chance to thank a few more people – Carol Hampshire for the flowers and all the committee for their help,  guests Desmond Thomas for being our Auditor, Charles and Louise for a donation during the year, our two drivers, Trevor and Derek without whom many members would not to able to attend and Peter and Roger for acting as bartenders. Jo Edser, caretaker or the village hall was also thanked for her work in providing our monthly venue.  Finally there was a presentation of a beautiful orchid each for Phyllis and Sheila who had worked tirelessly (well almost) to prepare the meal.

DON’T FORGET – NO MEETING IN JANUARY. Our February meeting on Feb 5th will see Peggy Weeks ‘ Beating The Blues’ no doubt she’ll have us getting fit for the new year!
