Event Name Raku Day
Organisation Grayshott Pottery and Café Bistro
Venue Grayshott Pottery in the Gallery Workshop
Description How do you fancy painting and firing your own decorative ceramics?

Adults and children are invited to take part in this very unusual event at Grayshott

Pottery near Hindhead under the watchful eye of Grayshott Pottery's own

craftspeople.

Raku is a Japanese technique of glaze firing using fire and smoke to create

unique patterns and designs. With raku pottery, the pot is glazed and placed into

the pre heated kiln (800 degrees C) with long handled tongs.

The firing process takes from between ten to fifteen minutes. When the glaze is

seen to be mature the pieces are removed with the tongs and smoked in

sawdust. After another couple of minutes they are then quenched in water and

cleaned.

This process together with the appropriate glaze gives the characteristic rustic

finish, colour and porous texture of Raku ware.

This event will be held outside and is very much weather dependent! There will

also be a BBQ available during the day. All under 16s must be accompanied by

an adult. Places are limited and advance booking is essential.
